BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) advertisements are being discussed as dull in crypto circles, yet some commentators have pointed out that they could be appealing for the wealthy.
BlackRock Takes the Stage with BTC ETF
Investment giant BlackRock released the anticipated advertisement for its newly launched iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) on January 11. The ad is a 1 minute 56 second summary that informs investors about the topic.
Jay Jacobs, the head of US alternative ETFs at BlackRock, seems pleased with the work. According to Jacobs, the ad highlights the easy accessibility of IBIT, simplifies operations for investors, and trades under the robust structure of BlackRock.
Experts Believe the Ad Targets a Different Audience
Commentators note that the language used in the ad is different when considering other Bitcoin ETF advertisements published to date.
“This is how you market to wealthy Boomers, folks. Calm demeanor, easy-to-understand investment case, soft new age music, suit without a tie… it all says ‘okay, adults are here now’,” wrote Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas in an article published on January 14.
Chris Dark, founder and managing partner of Fourth Turning Investments, described the ad targeting the Boomer generation as “very boring, brilliant” due to its distinct structure.
Prominent crypto asset investor Fred Krueger also emphasized that the ad is appealing to the “wealthy boomers” group.
“My wealthy Boomer generation doesn’t particularly like being told by tattooed Gen-Xers that the entire financial system needs to be thrown out. However, they are happy now that they can invest in Bitcoin through traditional finance companies. We are happily adding IBIT and FBTC to our portfolios because we trust BlackRock and Fidelity […] This is the takeover of the Bitcoin narrative by Wall Street. Resistance will be futile,” he said.
The Bitcoin ETF marketing battle began with a bold move by Bitwise, which released an ad about 20 days before approval on December 18. Following Bitwise, ETF issuers Hashdex and VanEck also published ads related to the topic.
Market giants ARK Invest and Grayscale followed suit with their advertising campaigns. Last week’s highlight was the Valkyrie Bitcoin Fund, known as BRRR. The ETF’s ad took its place on the Nasdaq billboard in New York Times Square.
