On the 15th anniversary of the publication of the Bitcoin white paper, Canadian Parliament Member (MP) Joel Lightbound thanked Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, in the Canadian parliament. During his speech, the MP argued that people should examine Bitcoin. Lightbound revealed that he himself owns Bitcoin and said that people should study this asset rather than just buying it.
Bitcoin Wave in the Canadian Parliament
The MP added that Bitcoin was created during a financial crisis and over the years, it has become a tool for people to empower their lives. Joel Lightbound continued his speech with the following statements:
“Bitcoin has helped thousands of families avoid the tragedy of the devaluation of their currency. It represents a truly progressive ideal. So, let me thank Satoshi Nakamoto and wish a blessed 15th anniversary to the Bitcoin white paper, whoever he may be today.”
During his speech, the MP made two important quotes, one from former Twitter CEO and Bitcoin advocate Jack Dorsey, and the other from Gary Gensler, the chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The quote from Gary Gensler dates back to 2019 when he was not yet the SEC chairman.
Gensler’s Thoughts on Crypto
In a blog post in 2019, Gensler wrote that despite the thousands of projects in the crypto ecosystem, Bitcoin, created by Satoshi Nakamoto, has the potential to promote change. Gensler included the following statements in his post:
“Directly or indirectly, as a catalyst. Worth following for its potential to lower verification and networking costs, especially to reduce economic rents and data privacy costs and to promote economic participation.”
Gensler also tweeted to congratulate Satoshi Nakamoto on the 15th anniversary of the Bitcoin white paper. However, in his post, Gensler also added a message suggesting that crypto companies deceiving investors should start complying with securities laws.
Considering Gensler’s background in the crypto community and crypto education prior to becoming the SEC chairman, his appointment was widely welcomed. However, his tenure as SEC chairman has been filled with controversies and disappointments for the crypto community.
