A Web3 developer shared the unfortunate story of losing money after accidentally making wallet keys public on the developer platform GitHub. Brian Guan, co-founder of the Web3 application Unlonely, posted on X on June 5, claiming he lost $40,000 after creating a public repository on GitHub. The developer said he forgot that his private keys were in the repository.
Shocking Mistake from a Popular Figure
When a community member asked how long it took for the funds to be withdrawn, the Web3 founder said it took someone only two minutes to withdraw the funds.
When Guan’s post went viral on X, the reactions from the crypto community were mixed. Some members expressed sympathy and offered support to the developer, while others brought up Guan’s past comments about developers using OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT for coding.
A community member said they were sorry about the experience and hoped Guan would recover. However, other community members remained unresponsive to the issue. In 2023, Guan published his views on smart contract engineers. According to Guan, projects paying $200,000 to smart contract engineers are referred to as ngmi, an acronym for “not gonna make it.” The Web3 founder stated that every solid developer should be able to write solidity with the help of ChatGPT.
Therefore, community member Foobar posted a parody of Guan’s previous post, saying if someone pays $200 for a hardware wallet, they are not gonna make it, and developers should be able to store private keys on their GitHub. Meanwhile, another user said they were sorry about what happened but noted that Guan’s views on developers seemed like something from Generation Z.
ChatGPT Move in the Memecoin Space
While using ChatGPT for coding is still controversial for many, a memecoin coded using the AI chatbot has already achieved success in the crypto space. On May 28, the price of the memecoin called Turbo reached an all-time high, and its market value exceeded $600 million.
Popular artist Rhett Mankind created the memecoin using ChatGPT in April 2023. Mankind used prompts to guide ChatGPT in creating what he called the next great memecoin.
