The Ethereum $3,509 developers are set to launch a major network upgrade named “Pectra” in March. Preparations for this upgrade will involve necessary testing on test networks and software updates leading up to the scheduled date.
Test Networks to Be Updated in February
According to the Ethereum core developers, updates will be implemented on the Sepolia and Holesky test networks in February. Developer Tim Beiko stated, “If the updates on the test networks proceed smoothly, we will transition to the mainnet upgrade in March.” New client versions will be released in coordination with Ethereum software teams for the upgrade process.
Initially planned for the end of 2024, the Pectra upgrade was postponed due to its expanded scope. This upgrade aims to enhance network efficiency and improve user experience by incorporating several Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).
Key Innovations of the Pectra Upgrade
One significant change in the upgrade is an increase in the maximum stake amount for validators from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH. Additionally, mechanisms improving wallet user experience and account abstractions will be part of these enhancements. With new deposit and withdrawal mechanisms, users will be able to conduct transactions more swiftly.
Developers have created temporary developer networks to test various components of the Pectra upgrade. Moreover, a temporary Mekong test network was launched in November 2024 to conduct tests on critical aspects of the upgrade. The Ethereum community is working diligently to ensure the smooth progression of the upgrade schedule, which aims to boost Ethereum’s scalability and provide users with a more seamless network experience.
