Ethereum‘s co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently presented an updated 2024 roadmap for Blockchain, indicating that despite rapid developments in the cryptocurrency space, the revised roadmap contains “relatively few changes” compared to its 2023 version. This roadmap outlines the fundamental priorities that will shape the Ethereum ecosystem in the coming years.
Fundamental Priorities for Ethereum’s Evolution

In a notable statement from X, Vitalik Buterin endorsed Single-Slot Finality (SSF) as “the easiest way to solve most of the current weaknesses in Ethereum’s Proof of Stake design.” According to Buterin, SSF has the potential to address critical aspects of Ethereum’s design challenges. He also praised the progress recorded on Layer-2 (L2) networks and the successful implementation of Verkle trees.
Verkle trees are a data structure that can be used to upgrade Ethereum nodes (nodes) to store large amounts of state data without losing the ability to verify blocks.
Rethinking the Scourge Priority
Vitalik shed light on the redirection of the Scourge priority within Ethereum, which focuses on combating economic centralization. This battle is conducted in two main “areas”: reducing risks associated with Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) and addressing concerns related to economic centralization through liquid staking pools.
The popularity and growth of Ethereum staking service Lido, especially since Ethereum’s transition to the proof-of-stake algorithm, has become a focal point for criticisms related to economic centralization.
