The European Commission has rolled up its sleeves to carry out various risk assessments in four different technology areas, including artificial intelligence. According to the announcement made by the Commission, work will be done on four areas: artificial intelligence, semiconductor chip technologies, quantum technologies, and biotechnologies, and potential risks will be addressed.
European Commission to Conduct Risk Assessments in Four Different Areas
The European Commission will conduct various risk assessments in four areas: artificial intelligence (AI), advanced semiconductor technologies, quantum technologies, and biotechnologies. Potential risks arising from artificial intelligence technologies, which have been intensely discussed in the public recently, will be addressed.
Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal Market, made an evaluation regarding this move of the European Commission and made various statements. Breton emphasized the need to continuously monitor critical technologies and address potential risks:
“We need to continuously monitor our critical technologies, assess the risks we may face, and take measures to protect our strategic interests and security when necessary.”
The risk assessments carried out by the European Commission will continue until the end of the year. The results obtained from the risk assessments will be presented by spring 2024.
US Taking Similar Steps Regarding Artificial Intelligence Technologies
ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot released by OpenAI, gained great popularity globally in a very short period of time. With the rapid increase in the number of users of the ChatGPT chatbot, artificial intelligence technologies have once again become a hot topic in the public agenda.
Many technology companies, including Meta (Facebook’s parent company), Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple, have also started intensive work and investments in the field of artificial intelligence. The authorized institutions of countries have also taken action to evaluate potential risks arising from artificial intelligence technologies, along with this increasing popularity.
The United States has also taken significant steps to address this artificial intelligence technology. US President Joe Biden has met with technology leaders several times. In these meetings, potential risks of artificial intelligence technologies were evaluated.
