Elon Musk, who bought Twitter in October 2022, faced a major backlash in early July when he introduced a limit on tweet views on the platform. As the controversy over the tweet view limit imposed on Twitter users was being discussed, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, launched a new social media platform that would compete with Twitter.
Astonishing Record from Twitter’s Competitor
Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, became the new owner of the popular social media platform Twitter in October 2022. Musk, who has made many changes on the platform after buying Twitter, has become a major topic of discussion in public during this period.
The tweet view limit introduced in early July, in particular, caused a major reaction in the public. Although Elon Musk announced from his official account that verified accounts could view 6000 tweets per day, unverified accounts 600, and new, unverified accounts 300, these restrictions were lifted within days in response to the backlash.
However, during this period, a new social media platform called Threads, which is quite similar to Twitter in structure and is presented as a sibling platform to Instagram by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, Facebook’s parent company, was launched. Threads set a new record within days of its launch.
Threads’ User Count Exceeds 100 Million
Threads, launched by Meta, Facebook’s parent company, was made available in 100 countries worldwide and gained a large user base within days. Threads, within a week, surpassed 100 million users, becoming the fastest social media platform to reach 100 million users. The new competitor of the popular social media platform Twitter, Threads, has a structure and design very similar to Twitter in many respects. However, features such as hashtags and direct messages that exist on Twitter are not yet available on the platform.
Despite reaching a record number of users in a very short time, it also received criticism from the public for being a platform quite similar to Twitter. After Elon Musk labelled Threads as an imitation app, there were various exchanges between the two. It is being suggested that a new legal process may begin between the two companies in the coming days.
