The world’s largest retail chain, Walmart, has expanded its offering of the NFT collection Pudgy Penguins’ toy series, Pudgy Toys, to an additional 1,100 stores in the US, bringing the total number of stores selling Pudgy Toys to 3,100. Walmart continues to introduce 30 new Pudgy Toys, including Lil Pudgys Igloo Collectibles and Action Figures, each priced between $2.99 and $11.97.
Continued Interest in Pudgy Toys
Pudgy Toys were initially launched in September at Walmart across 2,000 US stores. Pudgy Penguins CEO Luca Netz commented on the matter, stating:
“The expansion to additional Walmart locations, alongside special toy offerings, underscores the enduring appeal of the Pudgy Penguins characters.”
Each Pudgy toy comes with a QR code that grants access to Pudgy World, a multiplayer digital social platform where users can create their own Forever Pudgy characters, play mini-games, and interact with other users. Pudgy World is available to users on the Ethereum Layer-2 network zkSync Era infrastructure and is currently in beta mode.
Noteworthy Details About Pudgy Penguins
All Pudgy Toys products are inspired by Pudgy Penguins NFTs, and NFT owners who submit their parts for licensing will receive royalties through the still-in-beta NFT licensing platform OverpassIP. Pudgy Toys and Pudgy World were first launched in May last year with the aim of blending NFTs and blockchain technology with physical toys.
The toys are also available for sale on the online retailer Amazon. Pudgy toys are produced by PMI Kids’ World, which also manufactures toys for Fortnite and Among Us. Last week, Pudgy Penguin NFTs briefly surpassed the floor price of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs for the first time. The floor price represents the value of the cheapest NFT in a collection and is considered an indicator of demand for the NFT.
Overall, according to CryptoSlam data, Pudgy Penguins is the twentieth largest NFT collection by all-time sales volume. The Ethereum-based collection, featuring 8,888 cartoon penguins, was launched in 2021 and sold to Netz for $2.5 million in 2022 after the community voted to remove the project’s founders. Pudgy Penguins owners had claimed that the founders failed to fulfill promises such as creating a children’s book and a metaverse game.
