The complexity of current Web3 wallets remains one of the main issues hindering mainstream cryptocurrency adoption. According to Bumblefudge, the chief officer of the Chain Agnostic Standards Alliance (CASA), an autonomous blockchain developer organization, the crypto industry will need to move beyond the current complex seed phrases to facilitate large-scale adoption.
Security Issues in the Web3 Space
Bumblefudge addressed the issue in his keynote speech at the Web3 Summit 2024 in Berlin:
“Seed phases will not work for the remaining 95% of the world. However, the solution, unfortunately, lies in boring, mundane standards and governance.”
Today’s complex crypto onboarding process remains daunting for mainstream users as it requires setting up a wallet with local tokens and irrecoverable seed phrases before being able to transact on a network.
For Web3 wallets to appeal to mainstream users, they need more user-centric features, with the first priority being moving away from complex seed phrases. However, Bumblefudge explained that this would require an industry-wide collaboration standard from wallet providers and developers:
“No one wants to write how they use it because they are all competing with each other. They all want to implement better parts. So nothing will work together, and nothing will be secure.”
Without a collaboration standard, wallet providers will not be able to create interoperable and more user-friendly solutions like transition keys:
“We need to move down towards the user rather than up from what the ecosystem and DeFi protocol want. We need standards for user expectations.”
Details on the Issue
In this process, it is important to note that Chintan Turakhia, senior director of engineering at Coinbase, stated that bringing the first billion users to the blockchain network would require beginner-friendly applications. Speaking on the issue at EthCC, Turakhia said:
“If our goal is to bring the next billion users, let’s start with just 100 million and eliminate all these friction points.”
To support mass adoption, Coinbase launched its smart wallet in early June with beginner-friendly features that replace complex seed phrases with account names and passwords. Turakhia expects these easier login options to become standard for crypto wallet providers in the future.
