Render Token (RNDR) is a distributed GPU rendering network built on the Ethereum blockchain, designed to connect artists and studios in need of GPU computing power with mining partners who wish to rent out their GPU capabilities.
What is Render (RNDR)?
Founded in 2009 by OTOY, Inc. and launched in 2017 by CEO Jules Urbach, RNDR conducted its first public token sale in October of the same year, followed by a private sale period from January to May 2018 where a total of 117,843,239 RNDR tokens were sold at the price of 1 RNDR each. Early buyers, beta node operators, and artists were included in the RNDR Beta Testnet to collaborate with the RNDR team to build and test the network until its public release on April 27, 2020.
RNDR is an ERC-20 utility token used within the network by artists to exchange GPU computing power with GPU providers (node operators). It utilizes both manual and automatic proof of work systems, or in this case, proof of rendering, to verify that all techniques have been successfully implemented before any technical documentation is released.
Leveraging the natural security features of the Ethereum blockchain, proprietary assets are hashed during upload and sent to nodes in pieces for processing. All RNDR payments are held in custody during creation and are released to node operators only after the artist manually verifies the successful operation. To prevent malicious actors in both user bases, all assets created on the network are watermarked until payments are successfully distributed, after which watermark-free creations can be downloaded and all payments are held in custody until manually verified to be correctly rendered.
The main company, OTOY, supports the RNDR team, which is based in Los Angeles and comprises members from around the world. The RNDR advisory board includes industry leaders such as Ari Emanuel (Co-CEO and Founding Partner of WME), JJ Abrams (Chairman and CEO of Bad Robot Productions), and Brendan Eich (Founder and CEO, Brave Software and BAT), all advising on bridging the gap between crypto communities and Hollywood studio production lines.
