The biometric data collection project, Worldcoin, now allows unverified users to reserve Worldcoin tokens (WLD), according to a recent announcement.
In an announcement on August 11th, the Worldcoin project stated that the World app now offers a reservation feature to make it easier for everyone to reserve their WLD tokens before verifying their World IDs. The reservation will be valid for 12 months, and users can use the reserved WLD tokens by visiting the iris scanning device called Orb.
About the Worldcoin Project
The Worldcoin project consists of three main components: Worldcoin ID, Worldcoin App, and Worldcoin token (WLD). Users who want to scan their irises to create a biometric database are rewarded with local WLD tokens. The iris scanning device is called Orb.
The global digital identity crypto project, Worldcoin, was launched on July 24th after three years of development. The project promises to create a global database in the future to distinguish humans from bots. The project’s claim is based on the fact that artificial intelligence (AI) will become so prominent in the future that it will be difficult to differentiate real humans from online bots, and World ID will become the default identity system for people to access various services.
The Project Faces Controversies
The project, which makes bold claims and proposes to solve a utopian problem, has been compared to science fiction series like Black Mirror. However, the project has already faced numerous investigations and regulatory issues due to its operations. The project was initially suspended in Kenya due to allegations of data collection. The Kenyan government is particularly concerned about Worldcoin collecting important identity information such as iris scans in exchange for digital identity.
In addition to the suspension in Kenya, Worldcoin is also facing regulatory legal actions in Argentina and the UK. While the project attracted over 2 million customers before its public launch, it did not receive the expected attention after the launch. Officials have not disclosed the number of real users requesting WLD tokens, but it is claimed that the response is promising based on user interest.
