Hong Kong-based Web3 investor Animoca Brands announced on January 16 that it has partnered with Chess.com. The public announcement highlighted developments related to the first launch of Anichess, a subsidiary of Animoca Brands that is developing a decentralized chess game. Anichess shared important details about the point system for the game, promising to provide users with a significant gaming space in its chess-focused project.

Anichess, which has also partnered with five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Charlsen, pointed out in its announcement on January 16 that the game initially features player versus environment gameplay. The company announced plans to introduce an online game structure in the first quarter of this year as the second phase.
The company also mentioned that it has developed a gaming environment on Anichess where players can solve daily chess puzzles. According to the announcement, users can earn Orbs of Power points by completing daily challenges, which provide in-game advantages and unlock new puzzles for additional rewards. Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, made the following statement regarding the matter:
“Anichess; revolutionizes the classic game of chess by combining traditional strategy and gameplay experience with a fantastic story and innovative elements of Web3 functionality.”
The launch followed Anichess’s seed round in June 2023, where it raised $1.5 million from investors including GameFi Ventures, The Operating Group, Koda Capital, Bing Ventures, 708 Capital, and Asymmetry Capital.
