One of the most important factors affecting the price of cryptocurrencies is the circulating supply of tokens, and unlock events are critical. We have seen massive price movements in altcoins with unlock events. In February, there will be unlock events for 5 cryptocurrencies worth approximately 1 billion dollars.
February Crypto Unlock Events
This month, there will be unlock events worth $982.78 million at current prices. According to data from Token Unlocks, the largest unlock event will be conducted by Avalanche (AVAX) on February 22. Based on the current market price, the planned unlock of 9.54 million AVAX corresponds to approximately $344 million.
Of the AVAX Coins to be unlocked, $162 million worth will go to the team and $81 million will be distributed to strategic partners. This could concern investors about the supply that may be directed to the market.
APTOS (APT)
APT Coin is one of the altcoins that makes headlines every month with significant unlock events. Altcoins entering the market with a low circulating supply often struggle to reach their first ATH levels due to the increasing supply. Examples like DYDX and XRP Coin confirm this.
The APT Coin team will unlock 24.84 million APT Coins worth $229.54 million on February 11.
The Sandbox (SAND)
Sandbox has two token unlock events per year, in February and August. The project’s first unlock for 2024 will be on February 14. There will be an unlock event worth $205 million, which is about 10% of the circulating supply. This is a significant amount for SAND.
Especially on days when volumes continue to be weak, massive unlock events compared to the circulating supply could lead to double-digit price drops if we do not see major demand triggers.
Optimism and SUI Coin
At the end of February, there will be a token unlock event for OP Token worth $76.5 million. SUI Coin is planning to unlock tokens worth $54 million on February 3. Investors need to be prepared for the potential volatility that the unlock events throughout the month may bring.
The increased circulating supply after the unlock event can cause additional selling pressure on the pairs. Or we may see sales by investors wanting to reduce their risk with this expectation. Finally, of course, unlock events do not necessarily mean that prices will definitely fall.
