On February 8th, the United States Commerce Department announced the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Security Consortium (AISIC), which includes a wide range of participants from every sector of the technology industry. This is also significant for the development of artificial intelligence coins in the cryptocurrency space.
Secure and Reliable Artificial Intelligence
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stated that the consortium aims to “bring together AI creators and users, academics, government and industry researchers, and civil society organizations” to promote an environment that creates secure and reliable artificial intelligence (AI).
The US government plays a crucial role in setting the standards and developing the tools needed to reduce risks and harness the tremendous potential of AI. President Biden has established policies to achieve two fundamental goals: setting security standards and protecting the innovation ecosystem.
AISIC’s Mission and Membership
AISIC will be responsible for developing guidelines for team building, evaluating AI capabilities, risk management, safety and security, and watermarking synthetic content.
The consortium consists of over 200 members, including some of the biggest names in the industry such as Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple, OpenAI, Anthropic, Adobe, Nvidia, GitHub, the Frontier Model Forum, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, and many more.
According to the official announcement, this represents “the largest testing and evaluation teams community ever assembled,” working alongside non-profit organizations, as well as state and local governments, from “like-minded nations” on standards for the industry.
USAISI and Executive Action
This development follows the establishment of the United States AI Security Institute (USAISI), which was created as a result of President Biden’s executive order on AI security issued at the end of October 2023.
Raimondo stated that Biden’s executive order will “ensure” that the US remains “at the forefront” in the development and deployment of secure and responsible AI.
White House Initiative and Collaboration
Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House, Bruce Reed, said that keeping up with artificial intelligence means:
“…we must move quickly and ensure that everyone from the government to the private sector and academia is moving in the same direction.”
Reed recently convened the White House AI Council on January 30th to hear reports on how they are implementing the actions in the executive order. As a result, an updated briefing was prepared that shows the US has “met or exceeded many of the requirements set for the first three months in the executive order.”
