Silicon Valley’s leading artificial intelligence company OpenAI has caught the attention of Cathie Wood’s investment fund Ark Investment. Ark Investment announced that it has invested in OpenAI through a $54 million VC fund. This move was made with the anticipation that the rise of the artificial intelligence industry will reshape the technology world.
Ark Investment Announces to Clients
Ark Investment confirmed the investment in an email to clients, stating, “As of April 10, 2024, the Ark Venture Fund is investing in OpenAI.” The technology-focused asset manager assessed, “OpenAI is at the forefront of artificial intelligence capabilities.”
Elon Musk‘s SpaceX and giants like Epic Games, as well as private companies, are among the investments of the closed-end Ark fund, which has now stepped into OpenAI. Ark investment committee member Brett Winton emphasized the strategic importance of the investment in an interview, saying, “Our fund is relatively new and small. To be honest, the progress in the fundamental model area has been faster than we even expected.” Winton added, “We believe there will be a potential market value of $16 trillion managed by fundamental model type companies by 2030.”
OpenAI Continues to Attract Investment
OpenAI has raised large amounts of investment. Most of these were made with contributions from giants like Microsoft. The company also allowed some of its employees to sell shares based on a valuation of $86 billion. Ark Investment stated that it invested in OpenAI through a special vehicle but refrained from providing details.
Ark Investment’s initiative will constitute about 4% of the company’s assets. Similarly, Ark, which also has a stake in competitor Anthropic, brings a strategic perspective to this field.
Ark Innovation ETF, a leading tool of Cathie Wood, has attracted attention with its large investments in companies like Tesla. The venture fund generally has a portfolio consisting of private companies. Winton stated, “Ark updates the value of its assets daily to give the fairest value to the daily investors in Ark’s product.”
Special Emphasis on Sora
Referring to OpenAI’s new artificial intelligence tool that produces video from text, Winton said, “The Sora model is mind-blowing. The pace of innovation is also mind-blowing, and that’s why we wanted to showcase it.”
