Iceland-based video game company CCP Games gained significant attention when it launched EVE Online, receiving numerous awards. Now, giants of the “old internet era” are gearing up for the Web3 world. Established in 1997, the game company is preparing for a new phase by launching its game on the Ethereum $3,864 layer 2 network.
Eve Frontier is Set to Launch
CCP Games announced a rebranding of its previously named Project Awakening blockchain-based game. It has also revealed that the game will be launched on the Ethereum network. The project built on the Ethereum layer 2 solution, Redstone, will feature a cryptocurrency token.
Like EVE Online, Eve Frontier is also a survival game set in space. These types of MMO games were very popular years ago, and although alternatives like Star Atlas exist, we have not seen a game achieve notable success in this genre.
The Game Features Cryptocurrencies
ERC-20 token standards will be used to incorporate multiple cryptocurrencies into the game. The website indicates that a crypto asset named LUX Token will be used for in-game transactions, along with various other cryptocurrencies for rewards and support. Unlike traditional game structures, players and developers can program layers using Solidity.
Eve Frontier will commence closed beta testing on September 27. The game will be available for PC and Mac, targeting former players of EVE Online. Last year, the company behind the game, CCP, raised $40 million for its blockchain-based projects.
CCP Games founder and CEO Hilmar stated:
“From exploiting space to shaping entire economies, you will see a different world in this vast darkness. We invite you to join us as we build this next step in our history; stay awake forever.”
