A longstanding governance dispute within the Aave protocol has escalated after the influential developer group Bored Ghosts Developing (BGD) announced it will not renew its contract. Aave, one of the world’s leading decentralized finance (DeFi) lending platforms, is recognized for its community-driven model, but recent developments have thrown this structure into uncertainty.

Developer Team Steps Back from Platform

Following the expiration of their contract at the start of April, BGD will no longer provide technical support to Aave. As the core team responsible for maintaining and advancing the platform’s technology, BGD’s withdrawal marks a significant shift. The developers have expressed reservations about Aave Labs’ direction, particularly with founder Stani Kulechov steering efforts toward the rollout of Aave v4. This move has prompted worries about diminishing support for the currently dominant v3 version.

Diverging Opinions and Market Reaction

In a public statement, BGD warned that transitioning users from v3 to v4 could put an actively functioning system at unnecessary risk. The team suggested that such a strategy might turn out to be a costly mistake.

Shortly after these remarks, the price of the AAVE token plunged over 6 percent. Stani Kulechov acknowledged BGD’s significant contributions to the platform in messages posted on social media. Notably, one of BGD’s founders, Ernesto Boado, previously held the role of CTO at Aave.

Marc Zeller, a prominent delegate, also highlighted in governance forums that most of Aave’s revenue is rooted in BGD’s codebase. He drew attention to the potential consequences of the team’s exit.

The friction has persisted for some time, as evidenced by a prior proposal to transfer Aave Labs’ assets—such as domain names, social media, and brand rights—to DAO control, which was narrowly rejected. Subsequently, Aave Labs suggested revenue from branded services be transferred to the DAO, but this was conditioned on recognizing v4 as the main technical foundation. BGD, however, raised concerns that this requirement could undermine the integrity of the existing system.

Ongoing Support for Aave v3

Aave Labs assured the community that users of v3 would not be forced into an abrupt upgrade. Kulechov indicated that his team would assume maintenance responsibilities for v3 if needed, emphasizing that system stability would be maintained.

BGD’s contract officially expires on April 1. The group announced it would offer a short-term support package, aiming to give the DAO time to secure a new technical partner during this transitional period. The departure is seen as a defining juncture for Aave, renowned for its stable approach to DeFi governance.

In a separate development, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission formally closed its four-year investigation into the Aave protocol without taking enforcement action. This resolution has effectively removed a layer of regulatory uncertainty from the platform.
