A Bitcoin investor known by the pseudonym Cprkrn has announced that he successfully regained access to 5 BTC—worth over $320,000—after nearly a decade, thanks to an artificial intelligence–driven process. Cprkrn’s story quickly gained traction on social media platform X, as he shared how he deployed the increasingly popular Claude chatbot, developed by Anthropic, to recover long-forgotten passwords linked to his dormant wallet.
AI assists in unlocking a lost wallet
Recounting his ordeal, Cprkrn explained that years ago he created three complex passwords on blockchain.info, then changed and forgot one of them. This left him locked out of his Bitcoin wallet for years. Over the past eight weeks, he attempted billions of password combinations using Claude, but without immediate success. During this period, he incorporated open-source tools like BTCRecover and Python scripts, running approximately 34 billion brute-force tests—steps that, according to Cprkrn, were streamlined by the AI’s ability to understand and interpret password clues.
Difficulty accessing crypto wallets is a frequent issue in the digital asset world. Industry reports estimate that between 2.3 million and 4 million Bitcoin are inaccessible, representing roughly 11% to 19% of the total supply. Most losses stem from forgotten passwords, lost seed phrases, or other mishaps that make recovery challenging.
Massive password testing and data mining
When standard methods failed, Cprkrn turned to alternative resources—searching through old college notebooks, an outdated laptop, and years’ worth of digital archives from various devices. He uploaded this data to Claude, which scoured two Mac computers, two external drives, notes imported from Apple Notes, and messages from iCloud, Gmail, and X. In total, more than 1 gigabyte of data was analyzed in the hunt for clues.
The breakthrough came from an old backup file dated December 2019, discovered on one of the older computers. With Claude’s assistance and by extracting a mnemonic phrase from his notebooks, Cprkrn deciphered the backup’s password and finally regained access to the private keys of his long-idle Bitcoin wallet.
Funds successfully retrieved after years of dormancy
While Cprkrn provided no direct evidence that Claude actively scanned his devices, he did share a blockchain transaction link confirming the wallet activity. Records show that, on May 13, five separate transactions totaling 5 BTC were moved from the “14VJy…ofuE6” address. Notably, these funds had remained untouched since early 2015.
Throughout the AI-powered recovery effort, Claude reportedly participated in attempts to crack a staggering 3.4 trillion passwords using various recovery tools. Cprkrn noted that the entire process incurred only $15 in artificial intelligence usage fees. While he emphasized Claude’s value in organizing and sifting through files, some community members claimed the chatbot’s primary function was data retrieval rather than actual password cracking.
Reflecting this skepticism, Reddit user MeteorSwarmGallifrey argued that Claude “did nothing beyond searching files—there’s nothing groundbreaking” in its performance.
