Brazil’s B3 exchange has registered its inaugural loan transaction backed by tokenized dairy cattle, signalling a new era in agricultural financing. The pilot financing operation, valued at 100,000 Brazilian reais, was secured with ten dairy cows, laying the foundation for future livestock-backed loans in the region.

Breakthrough tokenized collateral in agriculture

The transaction drew on cattle from Fazenda Engenho Velho in Paraná, a southern Brazilian state known for its agricultural productivity. Target FIDC, a Brazilian investment fund, coordinated the financing and managed the collateral registration process with B3, which is the country’s main stock and over-the-counter exchange.

The dairy cows collectively carried a market valuation near 120,000 reais. B3’s official records directly tied each animal to the corresponding loan documents, offering a transparent chain of ownership and collateralization.

The initiative utilized digital authentication methods and continuous monitoring technology provided by Cowmed, a startup specializing in smart agricultural devices. Each head of cattle was issued a unique digital signature and fitted with an artificial intelligence-driven smart collar, ensuring verifiable, real-time collateral tracking throughout the loan’s duration.

Mini dictionary: B3 is Brazil’s leading financial market infrastructure company, responsible for trading equities, commodities, and registering over-the-counter and derivatives transactions.

AI-powered smart collars increase credit reliability

Smart collar devices on the cattle continuously collect data on health, location, and behavioral patterns. This information enters a secure digital registry on B3, bolstering verification and asset integrity standards for agricultural credit.

Banks and lenders in Brazil have previously faced challenges establishing transparent ownership and health status of livestock used as collateral, prompting conservative valuations and limited credit offers to farmers. The adoption of constant digital surveillance now permits lenders to more accurately value livestock and minimize operational risks for the duration of the loan.

Continuous tracking by AI-powered collars significantly improves asset authentication and provides lenders with up-to-date information on the livestock backing each loan.

In the event of animal loss, farmers can swiftly replace collateral digitally, without disrupting the contract, while additional livestock may also be added to strengthen the loan agreement.

Potential to reshape agricultural lending

This model is expected to provide Brazilian farmers with increased access to working capital, allowing them to invest in equipment, cover operational costs, and manage seasonal demands. Each animal receives an individual digital ID recorded in the B3 system, ensuring transparency and preventing the risk of a single asset being pledged in multiple agreements.

Cowmed currently tracks around 100,000 dairy cattle across more than 1,000 farm operations in Brazil and neighboring countries. The total livestock monitored through Cowmed’s platform represents an estimated combined value above 2 billion reais.

Partner organizations believe up to 20% of participating farms may adopt livestock-backed credit, paving the way for as much as 400 million reais in loan volume on B3 with tokenized cattle as collateral.

The deployment of tokenized livestock collateral represents a broader shift in asset tokenization, as financial institutions seek secure digital representations of tangible assets for enhanced risk management and transparency. B3’s integration of real-time agricultural intelligence and digital authentication supports a more robust financing environment for Brazil’s livestock industry.
