Circle announced on Monday that it will acquire IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio, a move that strengthens its position as a top holder of blockchain-related intellectual property in the United States.

Expanding Blockchain Asset Base

The acquisition will include over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 individual patents issued globally. By securing this portfolio, Circle aims to reinforce its technology foundation and further its ambition of building a new internet financial system.

Circle holds a registered stock under the ticker CRCL, and shares saw a premarket uptick of more than 2% after the announcement, according to data from Yahoo Finance. The company did not disclose financial terms for the patent acquisition.

IBM’s blockchain strategy has predominantly focused on supply chain solutions, seeking to boost transparency and trace products through various intermediaries. Patent research firm GreyB noted that IBM’s most active period for blockchain patent filings was between 2018 and 2019, when it submitted over 500 related patents. In recent years, IBM has reduced its level of patent activity in this field.

IBM has been a pioneer in technological innovation, and this acquisition expands Circle’s ability to advance the infrastructure that powers global, internet-native finance, according to Sarah Wilson, Circle’s general counsel and corporate secretary.

Strategic Vision and Industry Trends

Circle is best known as the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, which has seen increasing adoption in both retail and institutional crypto markets. The company has consistently invested in growing its technology base, aligning with its vision to help shape the next generation of digital finance infrastructure.

The acquisition comes at a time when blockchain and real-world asset integration are drawing heightened interest across the sector. The ability to leverage deep patent portfolios gives fintech firms such as Circle an edge, not only for defending their business but also for supporting new digital finance technologies.

Amid growing demand for seamless integration between traditional and digital finance, innovative platforms are emerging that connect the two worlds. One standout example is 1stepSwap, which enables direct blockchain access to real-world assets such as major US company shares and commodities like gold and silver. Its technology finds the most favorable rates across the market, allowing users to diversify their portfolios and transact quickly—without the need for intermediaries.

IBM’s Shifting Blockchain Focus

IBM has historically prioritized blockchain solutions aimed at the logistics sector, leveraging distributed ledgers to track shipments, parts, and products from their source to their final destination. However, after a surge in blockchain patent filings in 2018 and 2019, IBM has scaled back its patent activity in this field.

The latest move signifies IBM’s ongoing shift away from holding extensive blockchain patents, while simultaneously giving Circle exclusive control over an expansive portfolio of intellectual property in digital finance technology.

Industry observers will be watching how Circle leverages its bolstered intellectual property position to introduce new products, enhance existing infrastructure, and play a role in shaping regulatory and competitive dynamics within the broader blockchain ecosystem.
