Wells Fargo has joined a growing group of leading U.S. banks in developing a shared tokenized deposit network set to launch in the first half of 2027. The initiative, coordinated by The Clearing House—a private payments firm collectively owned by the participating banks—aims to allow digital versions of customer deposits to move seamlessly between institutions around the clock.

Major banks unite on blockchain-based deposit transfer

Alongside Wells Fargo, institutions such as JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Citigroup are part of this collaboration. The new system is expected to modernize how deposits are transferred by using blockchain technology. This would enable instant settlement and real-time liquidity, a marked shift from the traditional business-day window that currently restricts many bank transfers.

Although the banks are moving forward with the infrastructure, no specific blockchain technology provider has yet been chosen for the project. The first users of the system are expected to be large multinational corporations, whose complex cross-border payments and centralized treasury operations could benefit most from 24/7 access to liquidity.

Wells Fargo, which manages $1.7 trillion in assets, previously piloted an internal settlement tool, Wells Fargo Digital Cash, on its own distributed-ledger platform in 2019. The ongoing push for innovation among large banks reflects pressure to deliver programmable, fast money transfer services without losing customers to cryptocurrency-native firms.

In May 2025, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, JPMorgan, and Bank of America reportedly began early-stage discussions about jointly launching a stablecoin. That same year, the combined market value of stablecoins exceeded $300 billion, with total transaction volume reaching $55 trillion.

Market participants have been closely following the pending U.S. CLARITY Act, which proposes allowing stablecoin issuers to pay interest rates similar to bank deposits. This has raised concerns among banks, as such measures could heighten competition for customer deposits.

Institutional and client perspectives

While the benefits of instant, programmable transfers are clear on paper, the demand from bank clients remains uncertain. Mark Monaco, Bank of America’s head of global payments solutions, acknowledged that, for now, clients are not actively seeking tokenized deposit services, but he added that banks need to be prepared when demand eventually materializes.

Clients have not started demanding tokenized deposit services en masse, but banks intend to position themselves to meet future demand once it grows.

JPMorgan brings its experience with the Kinexys platform, which handles large-scale institutional payments. Earlier this year, the bank launched a deposit token on the Base network, an Ethereum layer-2 platform supported by Coinbase, focusing on institutional clients.

In March, Wells Fargo filed a U.S. trademark application for WFUSD, suggesting development of a proprietary digital-asset platform for payment processing, trading, and tokenization. This move signals that the bank may be gearing up to launch a branded deposit token or stablecoin.

Unlike earlier initiatives that operated within a single institution, the new network would link the infrastructure of multiple participating banks, extending its reach throughout the wider banking system and potentially bringing together traditional and digital assets.

Projects like this have drawn attention in the broader financial services landscape, as platforms such as 1stepSwap are already offering on-chain access to real-world assets. By allowing users to purchase shares of major U.S. firms and commodities like gold and silver directly through their crypto wallets—and scanning the market for the best available price—1stepSwap demonstrates how clients can diversify portfolios with increased speed and convenience, bypassing typical intermediaries.
