Binance has announced that two of its employees who had been detained by authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been cleared and released after questioning related to third-party fund movements.

Employees questioned, no charges filed

Concerns over the status of Binance employees surfaced after The New York Times reported on August 20 that some staff of the cryptocurrency exchange were recently detained at UAE airports. Binance later confirmed the detentions but clarified that only a small number of employees were involved and described the process as part of a “routine inquiry.”

A company spokesperson stated that the questioning was connected to the movement of funds from third parties through a client funds account managed by Binance. There is no suggestion from authorities that the employees were directly under criminal investigation, and they were released following the inquiry.

Only a few employees spoke to the authorities during a routine inquiry about third-party fund flows through a Binance account. The employees have now been released and are not under investigation by local law enforcement, according to information shared by Binance.

No allegations or specific details about the transactions in question have been disclosed publicly. UAE authorities have not named the individuals or entities involved in the fund transfers, nor have they detailed any suspected offenses.

Official records so far indicate that neither police nor courts have brought any charges against the staff. The company’s claim that its employees were cleared remains unverified by local legal documents.

Client money accounts and compliance protocols

Client money accounts are established by financial firms to ensure that clients’ assets are separated from operational funds, typically involving the use of financial institutions, payment processors, or corporate entities. The transfer of third-party funds through such accounts does not automatically indicate illicit activity, but it often prompts additional regulatory scrutiny.

Binance has stated that it is collaborating with the Dubai Police and other regional authorities as the matter is reviewed. The exchange is also reportedly working on putting in place a new protocol for managing requests concerning cryptocurrency transactions and institutional accounts.

Details such as the amount of money scrutinized or the exact nature of the inquiry have not been disclosed by Binance, nor is there information available about how long the questioned employees were detained.

Regulation and continued operations in Dubai

The investigation has not impacted Binance’s regulatory status in Dubai, according to current research. Binance FZE, a major subsidiary of Binance, is classified as an active licensed virtual asset service provider with the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). The company’s license, issued in April 2024, allows it to conduct exchange, broker-dealer, lending, borrowing, asset management, and investment services in the emirate.

This comes as global regulators have continued to scrutinize Binance’s compliance frameworks, especially anti-money laundering (AML) procedures. Binance has responded by increasing its compliance staff and enhancing transaction monitoring systems in an effort to align with regulatory standards.

The circumstances in the UAE differ significantly from challenges the exchange faced in Nigeria earlier in 2024, when officials were arrested and legal proceedings were launched. In Nigeria, Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan was only released after criminal charges were dropped by prosecutors.

In the current situation in the UAE, the matter appears limited to regulatory inquiries around particular financial transactions, with no ongoing investigation targeting the employees involved.
