Bitcoin surged past $79,000 on Friday, marking its strongest rally in years as traders reacted to favorable regulatory developments and a significant announcement from the US Treasury.
Surge driven by regulatory momentum
The world’s largest cryptocurrency reached a high of $79,319 before retreating slightly to $77,584. This represents a 7% increase within the day and nearly 23% gains over the past week. Compared to the prolonged period in June and July when bitcoin traded largely below $65,000, analysts viewed the recent upswing as a sign that the market’s bottom had been established.
Cryptocurrency markets have been closely watching regulatory changes in the United States. Earlier this week, the US Treasury led by Secretary Scott Bessent revealed plans to at least double the size of its long-term bond buyback operations. This policy move sparked a drop in yields, reducing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like bitcoin and gold, thereby reinforcing positive sentiment across risk asset markets.
At the same time, anticipation around the delayed crypto Clarity Act vote has intensified. The Clarity Act, backed by the crypto industry, aims to establish clear guidelines distinguishing securities, commodities, and payment stablecoins. President Donald Trump described the bill as a “very, very powerful” measure and called on lawmakers to advance the legislation as soon as possible.
Standard Chartered, a major international bank, maintained a positive outlook for bitcoin. Geoffrey Kendrick, the bank’s Global Head of Digital Assets Research, commented in a note that even a $100,000 price projection for bitcoin by year-end may underestimate its potential. He pointed out the market’s capacity to quickly escalate in value, particularly after major resistance levels are surpassed.
Once investors remember how quickly prices can accelerate to the topside, and we get past the 6 October date (12 months after the all-time high) an overshoot towards the all-time high of $126,000 before year-end may be possible.
Market recovery and price outlook
Last year, bitcoin recorded an all-time high at $126,080 before sharp declines triggered by the largest liquidation event in crypto history. Over $19 billion in leveraged positions were closed at that time, creating extreme volatility and uncertainty across the sector.
Although subsequent headwinds—including the Federal Reserve’s reluctance to lower interest rates and persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East—eroded the price, recent regulatory guidance and fiscal policy appear to have renewed investor confidence.
Geoffrey Kendrick of Standard Chartered further noted that the recent bear market for bitcoin has been one of the most moderate to date. Additionally, analysts observed that the digital asset’s volatility has decreased significantly through 2026, indicating a maturing market dynamic.
Looking ahead, financial professionals are cautiously optimistic. While the crypto sector still watches for key legislative decisions and macroeconomic signals, the recent rally highlights a strong recovery and potential for further gains if supportive factors persist.
Mini dictionary: US Treasury bond buyback, a policy tool where the US Treasury repurchases government bonds from the open market to manage public debt and influence liquidity and interest rates. Increasing buybacks typically lowers bond yields and can make alternative assets more attractive.
