Market rebounds after challenging start to 2026

The cryptocurrency market entered 2026 on a difficult note, as investors faced steep declines in January and February followed by a sharp 20.5% drop in June. The sustained downturn fueled pessimism across the sector, with traders anticipating further losses.

A shift began in July as Bitcoin and other major digital assets posted modest gains, leading to a sharp upward reversal in August. As of now, Bitcoin has delivered a 22.7% return month-to-date, a major deviation from the historical August average of just 0.82%.

According to data from TradingView, this surge marks a clear departure from the extended range-bound trading that characterized much of the previous months.

Bitcoin’s explosive return this month has sent shockwaves through the market, achieving gains rarely seen in the asset’s history and signaling renewed investor optimism after a prolonged period of decline.

Technical analysts have begun to reconsider the broader market outlook, with several suggesting the bearish phase may have fully concluded.

Key support and resistance levels, and technical perspectives

Prominent market analyst Doctor Profit observed that the price structure has shifted decisively toward buyers. He identified $71,000 as a newly established support level, replacing it as a former ceiling for Bitcoin’s price. Doctor Profit points to $78,500 as the immediate upside target for bulls, with the potential for a test of the significant $82,000 level should prices sustain momentum.

Drivers behind the surge and institutional flows

The latest rally drew strength from a combination of a short squeeze among leveraged traders and renewed demand from institutional investors. A surge in short covering forced the closure of billions of dollars in leveraged bearish positions, adding steam to the move upward.

Spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) added significant momentum, drawing $1.91 billion in net inflows between August 17 and August 21. Single-day inflows peaked at $606.29 million last Thursday, helping to boost total net assets in spot Bitcoin ETFs to $96.07 billion.

Mini dictionary: Spot Bitcoin ETF, an investment fund traded on stock exchanges, directly owns Bitcoin rather than derivatives, making it easier for traditional finance investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin without buying or storing the asset directly.

Despite renewed enthusiasm, significant resistance remains. Large sell orders, commonly referred to as “liquidity walls,” have emerged near the $80,000 level, indicating areas where substantial profit-taking or hedging activity could slow any further upward movement.

Analysts also note that while Bitcoin has outperformed other assets, capital rotation into Ethereum and other major altcoins may increase, as these competitors have thus far lagged the flagship cryptocurrency’s rally.

The latest ETF inflows and the resulting short squeeze have dramatically shifted the market mood, but institutional sellers and liquidity walls are likely to test the strength of this breakout.
