Peter Brandt, CEO of Factor LLC and a well-known technical analyst in the crypto industry, has raised concerns regarding the reliability of Binance’s trading infrastructure after a sudden and isolated price anomaly in Bitcoin trading on the platform.

Price anomaly and liquidation cascade on Binance

On Saturday, August 22, Binance experienced a significant and localized disruption in Bitcoin’s price movement. Within a single hour, the BTC/USD trading pair saw a dramatic downward wick, momentarily driving the price as low as $72,500. This sharp move took place even as Bitcoin’s broader market price remained close to $79,000.

At the same time, charts from other major exchanges like Coinbase showed much less volatility. The lowest price for BTC/USD at Coinbase during this period was $75,800, revealing a $3,300 disparity compared to Binance. This artificial price gap led to widespread forced liquidations among Binance users, triggering stop-loss orders and erasing margin collateral for many traders on the platform.

Analyst criticism and historical concerns

Peter Brandt took to social media to voice criticism over Binance’s handling of the situation. He described the development as another incident that left retail traders facing losses because their protective orders were executed at prices far below the true market value.

Brandt described the flash crash as a recurring problem for Binance users, calling it another “boondoggle” and asserting that the platform has a history of “historically gruesome stop-outs,” with a similar event having occurred on October 10, 2025.

Binance, recognized as one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume, has faced previous scrutiny over order execution and platform stability during volatile market incidents. Brandt argued that such recurring events undermine the trust of retail investors and highlighted the need for more robust trading safeguards.

Liquidity dynamics and risk management

The sharp price dip on Binance was the result of fragmented liquidity in the cryptocurrency market. When a large sell order hits one exchange, like Binance, and there is not enough immediate buying interest at prevailing prices, a temporary vacuum in the order book can appear. This liquidity gap can cause rapid price slides on a single platform, even as other exchanges remain stable.

As the price began to fall, Binance’s automated systems began liquidating leveraged trades in succession. Each liquidation introduced additional sell pressure, triggering a chain reaction and amplifying the downward move until the price reached $72,500.

The event illustrated the high risk of using local protective orders based solely on an exchange’s last traded price. In such cases, only a market-wide weighted Mark Price can serve as effective protection against isolated flash crashes and abnormal price fluctuations.

The incident underscored the critical difference between protective orders linked to a local platform’s last price and those tied to the market-wide Mark Price, highlighting the heightened risk for traders during periods of thin liquidity.
