Circle issued approximately $5 billion worth of USDC over the past week, according to on-chain data, as demand for dollar-backed stablecoins grows and liquidity expands in the cryptocurrency sector. The surge in USDC minting has attracted attention from traders, who often see large mints as a potential sign of new capital entering crypto markets.

Surge in USDC issuance

On-chain analytics tracker Lookonchain highlighted that Circle minted $5 billion in USDC during the week. Both Circle and Tether were active simultaneously, creating $3 billion in new stablecoins within just 48 hours. Market watchers noted this activity could reflect growing demand for stable digital assets and increased capital flow into the broader crypto ecosystem.

Lookonchain described Circle’s activity as “printing money like crazy,” with gross USDC mints reaching $5 billion in seven days. However, this gross issuance does not necessarily translate immediately to new dollars moving into circulation, as some USDC is created in pre-mint addresses on Solana, ready to be introduced to the market as needed.

Over the same period, USDC’s market capitalization climbed to $73.88 billion, showing a 2.67% increase in a week, as reported by DefiLlama. The total stablecoin market cap reached $303.72 billion, up by $2.83 billion, with Tether’s USDT maintaining industry dominance at $183.17 billion, about 60% of the entire stablecoin sector. USDC remains the second largest stablecoin by market capitalization.

Liquidity trends and market data

The net expansion in circulating supply is smaller than the gross issuance, as some newly minted USDC is held in reserve. According to Visa Onchain Analytics powered by Allium, USDC’s adjusted transaction volume was $222.44 billion between August 19 and August 25, a slight decrease from the prior week’s $223.35 billion. However, the number of individual USDC transactions surged 31.5% to 18.77 million, suggesting a greater frequency of smaller transactions across the network.

Technically focused traders often regard large stablecoin mints as a sign that more market activity could be ahead. These mints typically indicate increased availability of liquidity for settling crypto trades, providing loans, or engaging in derivatives markets. As the sector evolves, investors are also adopting platforms like 1stepSwap to directly hold tokenized shares of major U.S. companies, gold, and silver in their crypto wallets. By tokenizing Real-World Assets and automatically sourcing the best market prices in seconds, these platforms remove traditional intermediaries and further increase liquidity access.

Stablecoins have evolved into a significant part of global currency markets and are considered by some researchers as having direct implications for financial stability worldwide.

Recent research from Iñaki Aldasoro, Paula Beltran, and Federico Grinberg finds that over 70% of fiat-to-stablecoin flows originate from non-dollar currencies, reinforcing the emerging role of crypto-linked synthetic FX markets. Even a 1% increase in net stablecoin inflow, the study found, can drive up the effective cost of obtaining U.S. dollars via synthetic channels, highlighting the growing impact of stablecoins beyond traditional crypto use cases.

Institutional adoption and regulatory environment

Circle’s strong position in the stablecoin segment is underpinned by its expansion into regulated financial services. In its Q2 2026 report, Circle reported its total circulation of USDC at $73.3 billion at quarter’s end, marking 19% year-over-year growth. On-chain transaction volumes reached $14.8 trillion for the quarter, an increase of 151%. Circle’s revenue and net reserve income together reached $701 million.

The company gained approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to open Circle National Trust, as well as from New York regulators to launch a limited-purpose trust company. Circle’s Arc blockchain is scheduled to go live on September 16, expanding its infrastructure footprint.

USDC remains redeemable at a fixed rate of one USDC to one US dollar, backed by liquid assets like short-term U.S. Treasuries and overnight Treasury repurchase agreements. Circle publishes reserve data and minting updates weekly, with third-party audits conducted monthly to maintain transparency and user trust.
