JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the United States, has indicated it is open to launching a stablecoin in the future, according to a company spokesperson. While no active plan is underway to issue a stablecoin, the bank remains alert to evolving market demand and regulatory requirements.

JPMorgan considers stablecoin options

A JPMorgan representative said the bank has recently held preliminary discussions about the potential for creating its own stablecoin. The spokesperson stated that, although there are no current plans, the bank would consider all options in response to customer interest and future regulatory developments.

JPMorgan has not yet started the launch process for a stablecoin, but its willingness to explore new digital asset products reflects the shifting landscape within traditional banking, especially as stablecoins gain traction globally.

While we have no plans to issue a stablecoin, depending on customer demand and the evolution of the regulatory landscape, we would of course evaluate all options in the future.

JPM Coin and deposit tokens

The bank already operates JPM Coin, a digital deposit token introduced in November 2025 and designed specifically for institutional clients. JPM Coin enables large-scale clients to conduct transactions more quickly and efficiently using blockchain technology.

Deposit tokens like JPM Coin differ from stablecoins in their structure and use. While stablecoins are typically backed by reserves of assets such as the US dollar or government bonds, deposit tokens serve as digital representations of the bank’s actual deposits, functioning within the existing regulatory environment of commercial banks.

Mini dictionary: Stablecoin, a digital asset that aims to maintain a stable value by being pegged to a reserve asset like a fiat currency, usually through a mix of reserves and algorithmic mechanisms, making it suitable for payments and remittances.

Banks shifting attitudes toward stablecoins

Major banks in the United States, which initially viewed stablecoins as a competitive threat, are now reevaluating their stance. Many are reportedly considering launching their own stablecoin products to participate in a market expected to process up to $1.5 quadrillion annually by 2035.

JPMorgan noted in a recent research report that stablecoins have become essential due to their efficiency in enabling rapid money transfers. The bank observed increasing demand from both consumers and organizations for real-time movement of money, stating that instant settlement is evolving from a luxury into a necessity.

Consumers and businesses increasingly expect funds to move as fast as information. The sharp growth in real-time payment signals that instant settlement is moving from a ‘nice-to-have’ to a ‘must-have.’

Stablecoin initiatives across major US banks

In June, a group of US banks and payment companies joined the Open Standard initiative to launch a multi-currency OpenUSD stablecoin aimed at improving global payments infrastructure.

According to recent reports, more than a dozen financial institutions, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Santander, are collaborating on a wide-reaching stablecoin project intended to serve commercial clients with all Group of Seven currencies, beginning with the US dollar.

The aim of these projects is to enhance efficiency in cross-border commercial payments and to ensure that banks maintain their relevance as digital finance evolves.
