Bitcoin is facing renewed selling pressure after its recent surge toward $81,500, as recent data indicates smaller holders are reducing their exposure while large Bitcoin wallets continue accumulating the asset.

Major divergence between retail and whale investors

Recent on-chain data shows a clear divide between retail and whale investors in the Bitcoin market. Data cited by crypto analyst Ali Charts points out that Bitcoin’s price climbed approximately 31% in its latest rally, moving from $62,229 to about $81,500 within a short period. However, wallets with balances between 0.1 and 1 BTC posted an Accumulation Trend Score of -0.982, which suggests these holders have been distributing, not accumulating, Bitcoin during this period.

In contrast, holders with at least 100 BTC have been actively accumulating, according to the same analysis. Wallets holding more than 10,000 BTC increased their balances by 46,420 BTC over the past 60 days, highlighting clear institutional and whale support in the market.

Wallets containing over 10,000 BTC added 46,420 BTC to their holdings in the last 60 days, pointing to persistent accumulation among large-cap investors even as smaller holders scale back their exposure.

Institutional demand remains strong

Despite price fluctuations, institutional demand for Bitcoin continues to act as a vital driver. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $2.5 billion in inflows over seven trading sessions ending August 27, marking their strongest performance since October. This surge in ETF activity signals that institutional players are increasing their exposure to the leading cryptocurrency, even as market volatility persists.

Technical outlook and key levels

Bitcoin is currently trading at approximately $77,671, with a 24-hour volume near $77.15 billion and a market capitalization around $1.56 trillion. BTC dominance stands at 59.62%, while the asset has declined about 2.06% in the past 24 hours.

The recent drop saw Bitcoin fall below the $76,449 support on the 30-minute chart. Market analysts warn that continued weakness below this level could bring BTC down to the $74,000 level, and if further negative momentum continues, to the $70,000-$71,200 order-block range. This transition signals a potential short-term correction rather than a reversal of the broader trend.

The crucial level for bullish momentum is identified at $77,184. If Bitcoin manages a close above this threshold, it may reclaim the broken range and target a return toward $78,000 or higher. By contrast, a sustained move below $74,000 could see support tested near $71,200 before buyers have another opportunity for recovery.

If Bitcoin manages to hold above $74,000 and reclaims $77,184, buying interest may quickly return to the market. However, persistent selling could see BTC retest support between $70,000 and $71,200 before any meaningful rebound materializes.

Earlier, Bitcoin briefly surged past $80,000 on August 25, peaking around $81,238 before retreating. The $80,000-$82,000 zone remains a significant area of resistance, suggesting that bulls will need increased momentum to break through this level.
