U.S. Bank, the fifth-largest commercial bank in the United States, has completed a live pilot of its stablecoin, USBDC, by transferring actual funds between its branches in the U.S. and Europe via the public Stellar blockchain (XLM). The trial transferred real capital through open blockchain rails, demonstrating the ability to move large sums securely across borders without relying on private, closed networks.

Stablecoin deployment and compliance features

U.S. Bank chose not to create a separate private network for the test, instead utilizing Stellar’s public infrastructure. The bank sought to overcome typical regulatory concerns associated with open blockchains, integrating USBDC into its internal risk management systems to ensure compliance and oversight.

Jamie Walker, U.S. Bank’s head of digital assets, highlighted that the bank’s digital asset platform is tightly linked with its risk controls. The USBDC stablecoin includes built-in freezing and clawback capabilities. This enables the bank to instantly freeze or retrieve funds in the event of a mistaken transaction or if flagged by financial authorities.

USBDC’s code allows funds to be frozen or returned instantly with a single click, whether a transaction is sent to an incorrect address or flagged for compliance reasons.

At this stage, USBDC is designed exclusively for internal settlements and treasury operations and is not intended for retail customer use.

Industry impact and institutional adoption

Denelle Dixon, CEO of Stellar Development Foundation, described U.S. Bank’s pilot as a significant development for the sector. She underscored that this marks a clear instance of regulated institutions leveraging Stellar’s open architecture for secure and compliant cross-border settlements.

U.S. Bank CEO Gunjan Kedia confirmed the success of the pilot, stating the system will enable 24/7 transcontinental capital movement with near-zero fees, eliminating dependence on traditional intermediaries and lengthy interbank reconciliation processes.

The new platform allows U.S. Bank to transfer capital across continents at any time with minimal cost, bypassing the slow and expensive processes of legacy banking infrastructure.

Stellar network and U.S. Bank’s market positioning

Stellar was selected for the pilot due to its established infrastructure for real-world assets (RWAs). Data from RWA.xyz indicates that Stellar currently secures $3.32 billion in RWAs. The network, widely known for USDC, has 685,000 retail holders but is increasingly drawing the interest of major institutional players. U.S. Bank’s approach mirrors strategies adopted by funds such as Spiko and Figure’s YLDS token, favoring restricted, large-scale transaction environments over public retail usage.

The deployment model saw only a small set of wallets—limited to U.S. Bank’s internal divisions—handling billions of dollars in transactions. This specialized system prioritizes security and high-volume capability over widespread retail access.

U.S. Bank’s swift movement to deploy a public blockchain solution highlights its innovative posture in the banking sector. While a consortium involving over twenty major financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, plans to launch a shared interbank token by 2027, U.S. Bank has already tested a live cross-border system running on open rails.

Mini dictionary: Stellar is an open-source blockchain designed for fast, low-cost cross-border payments and asset issuance. It is governed by the Stellar Development Foundation, which promotes financial access and builds infrastructure for global value exchange, serving both retail and institutional use cases.
