Bitwise Investment Advisors has announced it will terminate and liquidate its Dogecoin ETF (BWOW), with the final trading day set for October 14, 2026, less than a year after its launch in late November 2025.

Liquidation timeline and process

Bitwise revealed that trading for BWOW will stop before NYSE Arca opens on October 15, and no additional shares will be created after October 14. Shareholders looking to sell their positions must do so before the October 14 deadline.

The company stated it will convert the ETF’s Dogecoin holdings to US dollars on October 14. Final calculations of the fund’s net asset value will take place on October 21, with distributions credited to shareholders’ brokerage accounts the next day on October 22.

In its official communication, Bitwise characterized the move as part of its strategy to “optimize its product range to meet evolving investor needs.” No reference was made to BWOW’s trading activity or total assets as reasons for its closure.

Bitwise outlined plans to cease share creation and liquidate DOGE positions by October 14, distributing proceeds based on net asset value as of October 21.

Low investor interest and market context

BWOW attracted minimal capital despite a $3 million trading volume in its debut week. Over subsequent months, activity sharply declined, with total net inflows reaching just $318,000 in August.

In comparison to other US cryptocurrency ETFs, BWOW’s figures fell short. Hyperliquid ETF products have accumulated $2.1 billion in volume since launch, while Zcash and Chainlink-based funds have registered volumes of $1.5 billion and $680 million respectively.

ETF ProductTotal Trading Volume Since Launch
Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (BWOW)$300 million
Hyperliquid ETFs$2.1 billion
Zcash Fund$1.5 billion
Chainlink Fund$680 million

Aggregate trading volume across all Dogecoin ETF products in the US market totals about $300 million. This figure represents the turnover of shares rather than new net capital invested.

Dogecoin price reaction and analyst perspective

Following the announcement, Dogecoin fell approximately 2.6% to $0.084 on September 11. While the price move came immediately after Bitwise’s decision, market data does not establish a direct link between the ETF closure and the drop.

Ali Charts, a cryptocurrency technical analyst, observed that a TD Sequential buy signal appeared on Dogecoin’s 4-hour chart around the time of the news. The analyst pointed out that similar signals in the past have preceded rebounds of 6.96%, 2.71%, and 11.25%.

Recent technical indicators on Dogecoin’s chart suggest a possible recovery, with previous buy signals having forecasted notable price gains.

On the macroeconomic front, rising US Treasury yields accompanied the ETF news, which can diminish investor appetite for high-risk assets like cryptocurrencies. The higher yields on September 11 followed a producer price index report that matched economists’ forecasts.

Bitwise, an asset manager overseeing about $9 billion in investments across more than 70 products, continues to offer ETFs tracking assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and XRP. The liquidation of BWOW does not impact these funds.

For shareholders remaining through BWOW’s liquidation, Bitwise advised that final distributions may have tax consequences, depending on each investor’s purchase price, holding period, and account type.
