Price recovery and short-term outlook

CoinGecko reported that ETH’s 24-hour range fluctuated between $2,371 and $2,441, with the token rebounding from this week’s lows as of September 17. Over the past seven days, ETH remained 1.6% lower, but its 30-day gain reached 28.7%.

The latest rebound followed a sharp decline earlier this week as crypto markets came under pressure after the US Senate did not advance the CLARITY Act. During this period, Bitcoin neared a four-week low and Ethereum fell more than 6% on September 15.

Ethereum has begun to diverge from some broader market weakness, supported by the implementation of an infrastructure upgrade and continued institutional accumulation.

Network upgrades and block construction changes

On September 16, Ethereum activated Multi Party Block Construction (MPBC) on its mainnet, allowing multiple builders to contribute transactions to a single block. Under the prevailing proposer builder separation model, builders compete to have their blocks included by validators. With the MPBC update, while this selection process remains, other builders can now append eligible transactions before the block reaches the proposer, improving transaction inclusion and reducing reliance on a single builder for block content.

The MPBC operates at Ethereum’s infrastructure level and does not directly impact ETH supply or create additional demand for the token. However, its launch has given investors an Ethereum-specific development, further distinguishing the asset from other major cryptocurrencies during ongoing market pressure.

Mini dictionary: Multi Party Block Construction (MPBC) is an upgrade on the Ethereum network that allows more than one builder to add transactions to a single block, aiming to increase the decentralization and robustness of Ethereum’s block-building process.

Institutional accumulation and ETF activity

BitMine Immersion Technologies, a company focused on digital asset mining, increased its ETH treasury to 5,956,378 ETH following an additional purchase of 27,180 ETH last week. According to its disclosure on September 14, BitMine’s holdings now account for approximately 4.9% of Ethereum’s total supply of 122 million tokens, approaching the company’s target of controlling 5% of all ETH. Of this, 5,067,309 ETH had been staked as of September 7, representing about 85% of BitMine’s total position.

BitMine reported increasing its total ETH holdings to 5,956,378, with 5,067,309 ETH staked, as it nears its stated goal of accumulating 5% of all Ethereum tokens.

US spot Ether exchange-traded funds, on the other hand, have shown inconsistent demand. Farside Investors tracked net inflows of $216.4 million on September 11 and $121.1 million on September 14, followed by $142.3 million in outflows on September 15. These recent ETF flows do not completely account for the ETH rebound, as the outflows occurred alongside overall market declines after the Senate vote.

Technical indicators and resistance levels

ETH has recovered to $2,444, slightly above its 20-day EMA at $2,434.49. The token remains beneath the $2,500 zone, where previous advances this month were rejected. Other key moving averages are positioned lower, with the 50-day EMA at $2,282.66, the 200-day EMA at $2,210.12, and the 100-day EMA at $2,162.19. Following its August rally, ETH continues to trade above all these levels, and the 20-day EMA has now emerged as the nearest potential support.

IndicatorCurrent Value
ETH Price$2,444
20-day EMA$2,434.49
50-day EMA$2,282.66
100-day EMA$2,162.19
200-day EMA$2,210.12

A daily close below $2,434 could shift focus back to the recent support near $2,370, while stronger selling might extend losses toward the 50-day EMA at $2,283. On the upside, reconquering $2,500 would open the way for a test of the September highs at $2,550, followed by resistance near the August spike at $2,650.

Short-term momentum remains mixed. The daily relative strength index (RSI) stands at 53.90, down from above 80 seen during the August surge, but it remains above the neutral level of 50. The RSI is now below its trend average at 60.03, signaling a slowdown in the earlier pace of gains even as price holds above major EMAs.

On the four-hour chart, ETH rebounded from its September 16 low, yet remains below the congestion zone between $2,480 and $2,500 where price struggled prior to the recent selloff. The Aroon Up indicator currently stands at 35.71%, while Aroon Down has dropped to zero, showing that the latest low is losing relevance in the 14-period window. However, the absence of a new high means there is not yet clear momentum for a breakout.

On-balance volume (OBV) has risen slightly after a steep decline, but it stays below its pre-selloff level. Sustained recovery in both price and OBV could strengthen a push toward the $2,480 to $2,500 resistance area.

ETH faces significant resistance between $2,500 and $2,550, with further upside potential toward $2,650 if these levels are cleared. If short-term support at the 20-day EMA fails, the next key area lies near the 50-day EMA at $2,283.
