Bitcoin has rebounded to nearly $78,000, recovering from a recent dip below $75,000 earlier this week. The latest surge comes at a time when the world’s largest cryptocurrency is contending with significant economic and regulatory headwinds.

ETF inflows rebound after major outflows

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) registered $159.5 million in net inflows on September 17, according to ETF flow data. This marks a sharp turnaround from the previous two sessions, during which investors pulled $450.4 million on September 15 and $295.9 million on September 16.

ETF inflows are broadly viewed as a proxy for institutional demand in Bitcoin. Earlier in September, these vehicles saw their strongest three-week inflow streak of 2026, bolstering market sentiment despite recent volatility.

DateETF Net Flows
Sept. 15-$450.4 million
Sept. 16-$295.9 million
Sept. 17+$159.5 million

From its current level, Bitcoin would need to rally another 28% to reach the psychological milestone of $100,000, a target that remains ambitious under current market conditions.

Regulatory and macroeconomic hurdles persist

Bitcoin’s recovery has come against the backdrop of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s latest monetary policy move. The Fed increased its key interest rate by 25 basis points to a new range of 3.75% to 4.00%. Of the 18 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members, 16 now expect at least one more rate hike in 2026.

In parallel, hopes for regulatory clarity waned after the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act, legislation aiming to provide a clearer legal framework for digital assets. Despite these pressures, Bitcoin managed to hold near $76,000 immediately after the rate decision.

This resilience, according to analysts, is significant. However, higher rates continue to cap appetite for riskier investments such as cryptocurrencies.

Mini dictionary: CLARITY Act, a proposed U.S. legislative bill designed to define and regulate digital asset markets and provide clearer compliance standards for crypto companies and investors.

Key price levels and future outlook

Market observers note that before Bitcoin can entertain the idea of $100,000, it must break above its immediate hurdle. The $80,000 to $82,000 range has consistently acted as resistance since the start of the year, making it a critical level for further upside momentum following the recent regulatory selloff.

Expectations for Bitcoin to reach $100,000 hinge on more than a short-term recovery, as the $80,000 region remains a stubborn ceiling after several failed breakout attempts.

In the options market, open interest for December contracts is heavily concentrated at both the $80,000 and $100,000 strike prices, reflecting divided trader sentiment.

Downside risks are also present. Onchain data identifies $71,300 as a key support zone for short-term holders, with more substantial support located between $62,000 and $65,000 if current levels do not hold.

Despite enduring a rate hike, pessimism over pending regulation, and a streak of ETF outflows, Bitcoin’s ability to regain lost ground has provided cautious optimism for bulls. To advance meaningfully toward $100,000, however, the cryptocurrency must first convincingly turn the $80,000 threshold from resistance into support.
