Real-world asset (RWA) perpetual contracts on Binance captured the majority of price movement that occurred when US equities reopened after the Federal Reserve’s September policy announcement. Binance Research reported that, following the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, equity-linked perpetuals on the platform tracked 97% of the opening price gaps across 16 leading US companies.
Trading activity surges outside regular US market hours
During the same period, approximately $1.02 billion in volume traded via RWA-linked perpetuals outside conventional US stock market hours. This surge came as global traders responded to the FOMC’s decision on September 16 to increase the US benchmark interest rate to a range of 3.75%–4.00%, providing fresh macroeconomic information before Wall Street resumed trading.
RWA perpetual contracts, unlike traditional equities, offer continuous trading that allows investors to react to economic events and market news even when underlying equity markets are closed. Binance, one of the largest global cryptocurrency exchanges, has positioned these instruments as an alternative for traders seeking round-the-clock exposure to US stocks and related macro trends.
Binance Research documented that after major policy announcements, equity-linked perpetual contracts on Binance have consistently captured almost all price movements that materialize at the reopening of US equity markets, enabling investors to price developments in real time.
Derivatives volume grows with TradFi and index events
The trend also extended to other macro events such as the recent S&P index rebalance, where 198 TradFi-linked perpetual contracts generated $7.25 billion in trading volume during the market closure. S&P indices typically rebalance in March, June, September, and December, often leading to concentrated off-hours trading around these periods of index adjustment.
Recent research from Binance indicated that TradFi perpetuals expanded rapidly in 2026, rising from one ticker in January to 149 by August. These contracts accounted for roughly 28% of all futures volume on major crypto exchanges, with Binance controlling about 59% of that market segment, as institutional and retail demand for continuous trading increased.
Mini dictionary: RWA-linked perpetuals, or real-world asset perpetual futures, are derivatives that allow investors to speculate on the price of real-world assets, such as stocks or bonds, with continuous trading and leverage, providing price discovery even outside traditional markets.
| Event | Trading Volume (USD) | Market Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Post-FOMC decision (September) | $1.02 billion | 16 US stocks, 97% gap captured |
| S&P index rebalance | $7.25 billion | 198 TradFi perpetuals |
| 7 weekends, bStocks activity | $1.5 billion | 92% of opening gaps captured |
Continuous trading and tokenized equities drive new market structure
A similar shift has appeared in tokenized equity products such as Binance’s bStocks, which processed $1.5 billion during seven weekends when US equities were closed. These tokenized instruments have also priced in an average of 92% of Monday’s opening price gap, reinforcing the shift toward constant price discovery.
Unlike holding shares directly, equity perpetual contracts do not confer ownership or corporate rights. Instead, they track underlying US stocks, settle in USDT, and offer up to 10-times leverage. While this structure boosts capital efficiency and enables continuous trading, it can also increase traders’ exposure to liquidation risk, especially during volatile market events.
Binance Research noted that, “always-on” equity derivatives are now a key channel for repricing and risk management during periods when traditional exchanges are closed, capturing significant volumes around macroeconomic decisions and index changes.
The findings suggest that perpetual contracts, both RWA-linked and TradFi, are redefining price discovery by bridging between traditional finance and crypto market hours. As these products grow in popularity, they are likely to play a larger role around events that trigger major repricing in underlying equities, including policy shifts and index rebalancing.
