Coinbase has finalized its integration with Deribit, enabling eligible institutional clients in the United States to access global crypto derivatives markets through a regulated framework.
Regulated access to global derivatives
On Wednesday, Coinbase announced that it had merged its international derivatives business with Deribit, a leading crypto derivatives exchange known for its options and perpetual futures offerings. The completed integration allows qualified US clients to engage with Deribit’s deep liquidity pools by trading via Coinbase Financial Markets, which is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Coinbase International Exchange balances and positions were successfully migrated to Deribit on October 1. Prior to this move, US traders had limited regulated access to the global crypto derivatives market, often turning to offshore entities to gain exposure to advanced options and perpetual swaps products.
Mini dictionary: Deribit, established in 2016, is a global derivatives exchange recognized for its high trading volume in crypto options and perpetual futures, serving both institutional and retail traders outside the US.
In May, the CFTC issued guidance that authorized Coinbase Financial Markets to connect US clients with international derivatives platforms, paving the way for this integration. According to Coinbase, crypto derivatives now comprise approximately 80% of global trading activity, highlighting the significance of regulated access for US investors.
| Market | Access before integration | Access after integration |
|---|---|---|
| US Institutional Clients | Offshore entities required, limited regulation | Direct, regulated via Coinbase Financial Markets |
| Non-US Retail Traders | Direct through Deribit | Direct + upcoming options via Coinbase |
| US Retail Traders | No direct access | Planned access later this year |
Institutional focus and product expansion
Coinbase stated that US institutional clients can now use Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets to trade Deribit’s options and perpetual futures. Options through Coinbase Prime are anticipated to be available to these clients within the next few weeks.
The company further indicated plans to launch options products for eligible non-US retail traders over the same period, with US retail customer access expected to open later in 2024. This approach aims to broaden the presence of US-regulated entities within the global crypto derivatives landscape.
Coinbase highlighted the strategic goal of bridging US clients to the world’s largest crypto derivatives markets, providing institutional investors with safer, regulated access and streamlining operational complexities previously associated with offshore trading setups.
Role of the CFTC
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission serves as the primary US regulator overseeing derivatives markets, ensuring trading platforms like Coinbase Financial Markets comply with standards for customer protection, risk management, and market integrity. Recent guidance from the CFTC has clarified pathways for US-domiciled firms to offer global products while maintaining regulatory oversight.
Coinbase’s integration with Deribit follows the company’s approval earlier this year to operate a derivatives clearinghouse in the US, reflecting ongoing efforts to expand institutional and retail derivatives trading opportunities within a compliant framework.
