Ethereum, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has dropped back to the $2,500 range following several days of selling pressure fueled by rising US Treasury yields, a stronger dollar, and weakening institutional inflows.

Sharp price pullback as technicals weaken

On October 9, ETH traded near $2,500 after briefly sliding to around $2,408 the previous Thursday, marking an almost 9% decline from recent highs above $2,700 earlier this week. This downturn follows back-to-back declines of 4% and 4.5% on consecutive trading days, which erased most of Ethereum’s October gains.

The rapid drop has left Ethereum’s immediate technical outlook under pressure. Analysts noted the $2,500 zone had already been highlighted as a key vulnerability, especially after approximately $165 million in leveraged long positions were liquidated during the recent selloff.

If Ethereum fails to hold above $2,500, trader focus may shift to the next support area in the $2,400 to $2,450 zone, given that ETH touched a session low of $2,408 on Thursday, indicating buyers are being tested at those levels.

Exchange balances for Ethereum have dropped to multi-year lows, with supply now tightly linked to institutional flows and investor demand as staking and withdrawals steadily reduce available coins on the market.

US-listed spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw net outflows of $201.9 million on October 6, marking the largest single-day withdrawal in recent weeks. In contrast, Bitcoin spot funds recorded net inflows of $118.8 million in the same trading session, highlighting a shift in institutional capital between the two largest crypto assets.

Industry observers have indicated that Ethereum’s bullish narrative relies increasingly on institutional demand to absorb circulating supply, at a time when staking and exchange withdrawals have driven available liquid supply to multi-year lows.

The ongoing slide in exchange balances for Ethereum continues to raise questions about whether institutional buyers will step in to offset retail and speculative selling, especially as macroeconomic pressures remain a headwind for risk assets.

Traders are closely monitoring the $2,500 to $2,400 range for signs of buying support or a potential continuation of the current downtrend.
