Dragonfly managing partner calls AI cryptography fears “doomerism” as Ethereum researcher warns of new risks

In Brief

  • 🚨 Dragonfly’s Haseeb Qureshi disputes “bunker mode” as the answer to AI crypto threats.

  • 🛡️ Over 6.2 million $BTC are at risk if cryptographic signatures are broken, with most held on exchanges.

  • 🤖 Ethereum experts warn that AI could compromise crypto security sooner than quantum computers.

Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner at Dragonfly, challenged recent warnings from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake about potential threats posed by artificial intelligence to the cryptographic signatures securing cryptocurrencies. Qureshi described Drake’s “bunker mode” approach as “cryptographic doomerism” and argued that moving tokens to new wallet addresses does not represent an effective solution to AI-driven security threats.

Industry concerns over AI and cryptographic security

Justin Drake, a leading researcher focused on Ethereum protocol development, expressed concerns that enhanced AI capabilities could soon break the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) used to safeguard digital assets. According to Drake, a recent OpenAI report highlights that progress in mathematics driven by AI may accelerate threats to cryptographic security.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, Drake suggested, “It is now reasonable to brace for the possibility that ECDSA breaks before qday, in the worst case, in months, not years,” referencing the potential for AI to surpass quantum computers in breaking cryptographic protections.

Drake maintained that users should gradually transfer their holdings to new addresses where public keys remain shielded, as AI advancements could compromise these assets faster than quantum computers.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, also commented on the discussion, agreeing that the ecosystem should address threats stemming from “AI-accelerated math.” However, he cautioned users not to rush moving their funds, advising a measured response as the industry evaluates mitigation strategies.

Proposed solutions and the limits of “bunker mode”

Qureshi criticized the idea of “bunker mode”—moving funds to fresh addresses—as a limited defense, arguing that this measure only offers protection while assets remain dormant. If widespread exploitation occurred, coins at new addresses would lose value in a market destabilized by mass hacks.

Qureshi proposed that blockchain networks develop a “Cryptographic Recovery Mode,” using hash-based backup signature schemes that could be mapped to user addresses and enable validators to trigger recovery if core cryptography fails.

He emphasized that proactive upgrades rather than reactive fund movement would provide systemic protection against emerging threats from AI.

Bitcoin supply vulnerability highlighted

Amid growing discussions about digital asset security, blockchain analytics firm Glassnode reported that over 31% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply could be at risk if cryptographic protections fail. Data from Thursday indicates that 6.26 million BTC reside in addresses considered vulnerable to these kinds of attacks.

Approximately 4.33 million BTC are exposed due to address reuse—a vulnerability which could be mitigated by transferring coins to new addresses. Another 1.94 million BTC are susceptible because of certain address formats.

Rafael Schultze-Kraft, Glassnode’s co-founder, pointed out that a significant portion of the exposed supply, nearly 1.8 million BTC, is held on cryptocurrency exchanges. This represents more than half of all balances currently on major trading platforms.

These statistics underscore the scale of assets at risk should AI or future quantum computers breach the cryptographic systems underpinning Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
