The XRPL AI Hub has reported an unprecedented surge in activity from artificial intelligence agents operating on the XRP Ledger. In October, these AI agents processed a total of 13,909,096 transactions across 196 separate merchants on the XRP native chain, with settlements occurring in both XRP and RLUSD.
AI transaction volumes outpace value growth
Despite this significant milestone in transaction count, the value of XRP AI agent-driven transactions remains on the lower end. While data shows rapid growth in the number of transactions, most are micro payments and do not represent large sums.
The spike in activity traces back to late September and the beginning of October, but overall transaction values have recently decreased for several reasons. One factor is the anticipation within the XRPL community for a mainnet upgrade scheduled for next week, leading to some node validators going offline temporarily.
Additionally, ongoing volatility in crypto markets has impacted activity. Over the past month, the global market capitalization fell by more than $130 billion, with market sentiment remaining fearful for three consecutive weeks, according to CoinGecko. The last instance of widespread investor optimism, described as “greed mode,” was observed on September 21, 2026.
x402 upgrade and AI agent functionality
These market conditions tend to affect retail traders more than AI-driven agentic models working directly on-chain. The x402 upgrade, introduced earlier this year, paved the way for agentic payments, enabling autonomous software to purchase digital services without requiring human approval for every transaction.
AI agents can now pay for API access, computational resources, and inference processes using XRP or RLUSD as settlement currencies. The current market fear allows more developers to experiment with AI-driven micro transactions through decentralized applications, though these transactions represent only a fraction of trading volume.
The overall impact of AI agent transactions on trading volumes and XRP’s market capitalization is not immediate. Major change is anticipated if these agents begin regularly transacting for corporate clients through authorized, real-time payments.
RippleX, the development arm supporting the XRP Ledger, focuses on advancing these functionalities.
Mini dictionary: RLUSD, a stablecoin issued on the XRP Ledger, is designed to provide predictable pricing when using digital services and settling transactions in decentralized environments.
Growing share of autonomous activity on XRP Ledger
J. Ayo Akinyele, the head of engineering at RippleX, previously estimated that transactions conducted by AI agents have risen to constitute one quarter of total activity on the XRP Ledger.
XRP, the native coin for the ledger, facilitates value transfer, while RLUSD is used for pricing stability and settlement in services ranging from autonomous payments to wallet integrations. Ripple’s rollout of the XRPL AI Starter Kit in June 2026 aims to help developers access new tools for building dApps focused on automated transactions and crypto payment services.
RippleX’s engineering lead noted that AI agentic transactions now account for roughly a quarter of all activity on the XRP Ledger, highlighting the growing role of automated payments on the network.
Integration of AI agents and specialized protocols is expected to play an increasingly central role in the evolution of decentralized transaction processes on XRPL, with the market watching upcoming upgrades closely.
