David Schwartz, CTO Emeritus of Ripple and a key architect behind the XRP Ledger (XRPL), has suggested that significant advances could soon reshape the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, making it more accessible for everyday users.
Tokenization and regulatory landscape shift
In a recent interview, Schwartz shared an optimistic outlook for DeFi’s evolution, particularly by the year 2027. He highlighted that industry-wide tokenization is rapidly gaining momentum, while regulatory barriers that have long hindered broader adoption are beginning to recede.
Tokenization is really kicking off, and the regulatory hurdles are really starting to fall.
Schwartz, who played a central role in designing the architecture of Ripple’s XRPL, believes that breaking down these legal and regulatory barriers is critical for widespread blockchain and DeFi adoption.
Ripple is a San Francisco-based technology company specializing in digital payments and blockchain solutions, best known for issuing the cryptocurrency XRP and maintaining the XRP Ledger.
Mini dictionary: Tokenization, the process of converting ownership rights of real-world or digital assets into digital tokens on a blockchain, enables the fractionalization and easier transfer of these assets across decentralized platforms.
Retail adoption and future growth
Schwartz suggested that blockchain applications could soon serve a much wider market, extending beyond early adopters or crypto enthusiasts. He compared the possible transformation to the widespread reach that app developers have achieved through mainstream platforms like Android and iOS.
That’s the world that’s gonna be super exciting. And we’re really close.
However, he stopped short of revealing specific products in development or providing a timeline, emphasizing instead the general direction of the industry. Schwartz argued that bringing DeFi to the general public could unlock a new chapter in blockchain’s journey toward mainstream adoption.
He underlined that the desired outcome would be to build products that appeal to everyday users, positioning DeFi as a core part of mainstream financial services.
AI integration with decentralized finance
The conversation also turned to the role of artificial intelligence in future financial systems. Schwartz imagined a scenario in which AI agents manage daily financial tasks for individuals, aiming to address many persistent problems faced by users.
He speculated on how DeFi might need to adapt to a world where autonomous AI agents are commonplace, posing the question of what users will expect from DeFi in such an environment.
Mini dictionary: AI agents, in this context, refer to software programs powered by artificial intelligence that autonomously perform complex financial tasks such as asset allocation, trading, and personal finance management based on user preferences.
