JPMorgan Chase, currently the world’s largest bank by market value, is expanding its JPM Coin deposit token to operate on the Ethereum blockchain, according to Bloomberg.
Wider access to blockchain finance
JPM Coin represents US dollar deposits held at JPMorgan and enables qualified clients to transfer funds instantly, 24 hours a day. The token had previously launched on Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Coinbase, and now broadens its reach to the main Ethereum public blockchain.
Emma Landriault, who leads Kinexys Labs at JPMorgan, explained that cryptocurrency companies may find the token particularly useful for blockchain-based payments, while traditional financial institutions could use it to settle trades and provide collateral. Landriault stated that Ethereum was chosen due to its liquidity and widespread adoption among institutional clients.
JPMorgan selected Ethereum for the next phase of expansion, citing the network’s liquidity and the broad client usage it already enjoys. The bank intends for JPM Coin to be available on public networks, but access will remain limited to approved institutional participants.

JPM Coin remains restricted to verified institutional clients, even as it goes live on additional public blockchains. These steps are part of JPMorgan’s strategy to integrate more blockchain services into its offerings for major financial players.
Recent developments and expansion plans
JPMorgan expanded JPM Coin to Base, the Coinbase-developed Ethereum layer-2 network, in November 2025. At that time, the bank revealed plans to eventually support more public blockchains, reflecting increasing institutional demand for digital asset services.
In January, JPMorgan announced that it intended to bring JPM Coin to the Canton Network, a privacy-focused blockchain platform optimized for financial institutions seeking secure, compliant on-chain transactions.

JPMorgan’s latest moves come as major global banks accelerate efforts to adopt blockchain technology to streamline payments, settlements, and other financial operations.
| Blockchain | JPM Coin Launch Date | Main Purpose | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base (Ethereum Layer-2) | November 2025 | Institutional instant transfers | Institutions only |
| Ethereum (Mainnet) | 2026 | Expansion for blockchain payments | Institutions only |
| Canton Network | Planned | Private, compliant transactions | Institutions only |
Industry context and market outlook
Financial experts have noted a growing trend among established banks toward leveraging blockchain infrastructure to offer faster, more efficient, and transparent payments. While JPM Coin is not available to retail users, its continued expansion signals increased confidence in digital deposit tokens for regulated institutions.
Recent reports have also highlighted that Argentine banks are testing JPM Coin as part of their efforts to accelerate settlements, suggesting that the token may play a larger role in global finance moving forward.
The adoption of JPM Coin by institutions reflects the sector’s evolving strategy to embrace blockchain technology as a core component of modern banking operations.
