Bitcoin began to show signs of recovery in October, trading near $82,800 on October 19 and reaching its highest price in five days. This follows a rebound from last week’s dip toward $80,000 and caps a turbulent year in which Bitcoin’s price fell to around $58,000 before rising about 43% in the third quarter.

Recovery Lags Behind Previous Highs

Despite the recent rebound, Bitcoin remains approximately 34% below its all-time high near $126,000 set in October 2025. With less than three months left in 2026, investors are considering whether the cryptocurrency could mount a further rally or whether the primary gains for the year have already occurred.

Coinbase Institutional, the professional arm of the major U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, released its fourth-quarter outlook on October 7. The report assessed Bitcoin’s market structure as notably improved after the third-quarter upturn. However, the analysis noted that restricted liquidity could keep further advances in check.

Coinbase Institutional identified about 1.7 million BTC within an overhead supply zone between $89,600 and $93,700, creating significant resistance for any push toward the $100,000 mark.

The report pinpointed the $90,000 level as a critical threshold. Surpassing this price could spark stronger buying interest, although those who bought at higher levels might consider taking profits, possibly capping gains.

Earlier in October, Coinpaper referenced analysis from QCP Capital, which projected that Bitcoin could trade within a range of $80,000 to $90,000 unless there was a clear improvement in market liquidity. Meanwhile, Citigroup published a longer-term forecast for Bitcoin, setting a 12-month target at $113,000, rather than a specific year-end price for December 2026.

ETF Outflows Add to Market Headwinds

Institutional activity remains a central question for the remainder of the year. On October 16, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) logged roughly $82.4 million in net outflows, with total withdrawals over the previous seven trading days reaching about $451 million. These recent outflows followed an earlier period in which $729 million was pulled from Bitcoin ETFs, illustrating the volatility of institutional capital flows.

Despite these withdrawals, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have generated around $57.3 billion in cumulative net inflows since their launch. The recent selling represents only a small fraction of the total amount invested through these vehicles.

The shifting ETF flows indicate that while short-term institutional demand has weakened, overall institutional interest in Bitcoin remains significant and could rebound quickly as seen in prior market cycles.

Individual sessions of fund inflows have not yet established a longer-term pattern of renewed accumulation, leaving open the question of whether new demand will emerge before year-end.

Mini dictionary: ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund), a type of investment fund traded on stock exchanges, allowing investors to gain exposure to a range of assets, such as stocks or cryptocurrencies, without directly holding them. In the context of Bitcoin, spot Bitcoin ETFs provide exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements through a regulated financial product.

Monetary Policy and Market Prospects

Monetary policy continues to play a prominent role in Bitcoin’s outlook. Bitcoin’s rebound on October 19 corresponded with decreasing expectations for an imminent U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate hike. Nonetheless, persistent inflation and high Treasury yields are tightening broader financial conditions for risk assets such as cryptocurrencies.

The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds stayed near 5.1% at the start of the week, presenting a competitive alternative to more volatile speculative assets.

The interaction between real yields and Bitcoin suggests that a decrease in inflation-adjusted borrowing costs would likely support another substantial Bitcoin recovery.

Upcoming decisions by the Federal Reserve, including its scheduled October 28 meeting, as well as key economic data, are expected to provide important indicators for Bitcoin’s prospects heading into December.
