The rehabilitation trustee for the bankrupt crypto exchange Mt. Gox has received approval from a Tokyo court to delay the deadline for creditor repayments by one year, setting the new due date as October 31, 2027.

Repayment Delays Continue for Mt. Gox Creditors

Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi attributed the latest extension to the fact that many creditors have not yet completed the necessary procedures to receive their repayment, while others have encountered additional complications during the process.

Kobayashi confirmed that most of the base, early lump-sum, and intermediate repayments have already reached creditors who finalized all required documentation without issues. However, a significant number still await their funds due to incomplete procedures or technical problems.

Wallets associated with Mt. Gox continue to hold approximately 34,388 BTC, valued at around $2.8 billion, according to data from blockchain analytics firm Arkham.

The revised repayment timeline marks the fourth annual extension. Previous deadlines were postponed from October 2023 to October 2024, then to October 2025, and again to October 2026, each time citing processing challenges and creditor inaction. As of the last update, about 19,500 affected parties had received payouts, while others remain in limbo.

Mt. Gox Bitcoin Transfers Draw Market Attention

Mt. Gox, which collapsed in 2014 after hackers siphoned around 850,000 BTC, continues to influence crypto markets over a decade later. This week, the exchange moved 10,422.65 BTC—worth over $739 million at the time—from cold storage, as the Bitcoin price dropped below $70,000.

Most of these funds went to a new wallet, with a smaller amount transferred to a known Mt. Gox hot wallet. Arkham’s monitoring confirms that no subsequent sales or repayment distributions followed these movements, suggesting the assets remain under trustee control.

The estate last shifted assets in June, and since then, outgoing transactions have paused. When the trustee initially announced in June 2024 that distributions would begin the following month, Bitcoin experienced a sharp 6.5% decline in a single day, briefly dipping to $61,060 as traders anticipated possible large-scale sales by creditors. However, further delays in October led to a short-lived price recovery, as market participants viewed the postponements as reducing immediate selling pressure.

Mt. Gox’s Legacy and Shifting Market Impact

Mt. Gox was once the largest Bitcoin trading platform globally, but its collapse triggered widespread losses and left thousands of investors waiting for justice and reimbursement. After years of legal proceedings, a Tokyo court approved a civil rehabilitation plan in 2021, enabling roughly $9 billion in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to be distributed to an estimated 24,000 creditors through select exchanges.

Recent market sentiment suggests the remaining Bitcoin held by Mt. Gox poses less of a risk to the broader market. Markus Levin, co-founder of decentralized data network XYO, explained in June that the estate’s remaining coins are relatively modest compared to the current scale and liquidity of Bitcoin trading, describing the situation as more of a recurring topic than a significant source of downward price pressure.

Considering such technical events and changes in liquidity, market participants continue to monitor both large, legacy distributions and emerging trends that can cause sudden inflows of capital. In the meme token sector, internet phenomena can rapidly generate substantial trading volumes. For example, according to Fomo App, one notable trade with the “Niu Lai” meme token transformed a $99 investment into approximately $370,000. Platforms like Fomo App now offer investors a way to track token launches, investor rankings, and trade activity within a single ecosystem, facilitating the discovery of high-momentum meme tokens and providing access to real-time social and trading data.
