Zcash (ZEC) has experienced a substantial rally, gaining 2,076% since January 1, 2025, according to data from CoinGecko. Over the past three months, ZEC’s price climbed from roughly $400 to more than $1,680.
Rising Demand Follows ZEC ETF Launch
Market demand for ZEC accelerated on August 25 following the launch of Grayscale’s spot ZEC exchange-traded fund. Grayscale, a digital asset management company, introduced the ETF in response to growing institutional interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. The debut of this financial product triggered a sharp increase in trading activity, with daily spot volume nearly tripling in the days after the launch.
Mini dictionary: ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund), a type of investment fund traded on stock exchanges, offering exposure to a particular asset, commodity, or group of assets, such as cryptocurrencies, and allowing investors to gain indirect access to digital tokens through traditional financial infrastructure.
After Grayscale’s ETF launch, daily ZEC spot trading volumes surged, coinciding with the token’s rapid rise from $400 to over $1,680 in three months.
Whales Drive Leveraged Bets on ZEC
On-chain analytics service Lookonchain reported that two major traders entered the market with a combined total of 29,798 ZEC in 10x leveraged long positions, a move valued at around $37.57 million. These positions were opened within a span of 15 hours, illustrating heightened institutional or whale interest in the asset’s momentum.
In comparison, price changes among other cryptocurrencies have remained limited. Monitoring platform Santiment observed that recent gains in the digital asset market have been isolated, primarily concentrated in select tokens like ZEC, while Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen little movement.
| Coin | 7-Day Price Change | Current Price |
|---|---|---|
| ZEC | Up 2,076% since Jan 1, 2025 | Above $1,680 |
| Bitcoin | Down 0.8% | Just above $83,000 |
| Ethereum | Down 2.5% | Near $2,450 |
Altcoin Volatility as BTC, ETH Remain Flat
Major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum traded in tight ranges over the week, with Bitcoin slipping by 0.8% and Ethereum falling 2.5%. These moves contrast with the rapid appreciation observed in ZEC and a handful of other tokens.
Santiment analysts emphasized that recent rallies have been concentrated in specific segments of the market rather than initiating a broad-based altseason. This pattern often leads to increased volatility and risk for traders engaging with rapidly surging assets, as gains have not been evenly distributed across the crypto market.
Volatility and concentrated gains in selected cryptocurrencies have made trading conditions riskier for investors, who confront narrow opportunities outside leading tokens.
