Partnership targets Korean stablecoin ecosystem

LG CNS announced it will integrate Chainlink’s cross-chain, data, and orchestration solutions into its Digital Asset Platform Solution. This product is designed for Korean financial institutions seeking compliant blockchain tools to support digital assets and payment infrastructure.

Chainlink, a global decentralized oracle network, enables smart contracts on various blockchains to interact securely with external data and systems. Its key technology facilitates interoperability, allowing diverse blockchain platforms to transfer tokenized value and execute contracts in a connected environment.

Through this collaboration, the two firms aim to strengthen South Korea’s digital asset infrastructure amid a $68 billion national crypto market. They also plan to address technical standards for the country’s emerging stablecoin sector, combining Chainlink’s expertise in decentralized services with LG CNS’s experience in digital transformation.

Hongkeun Kim, executive vice president and head of LG CNS’s Digital Business Division, stated the partnership’s objective is to “grow Korea’s tokenized securities market and create a foundation for global expansion.”

The market for Korean won-backed stablecoins reportedly includes over 11 million eligible users, reflecting growing demand for regulated and efficient blockchain-based financial services in South Korea.

Role of LG CNS and regulatory developments

LG CNS serves as the lead contractor for Project Hangang, the Bank of Korea’s initiative for digital currency experimentation. The company is responsible for the project’s development, ongoing operations, and technological infrastructure.

In the initial stage of Project Hangang, around 80,000 customers across seven major Korean banks participated, giving LG CNS valuable experience in large-scale digital payment deployments.

LG Group, one of South Korea’s largest conglomerates, controls approximately 186 trillion won, or $140.5 billion, in assets through its 63 affiliates. The combined market capitalization of these subsidiaries exceeds $100 billion.

Mini dictionary: LG CNS is the digital technology arm of LG Group, providing IT and AI solutions for enterprise clients across South Korea and internationally. The company focuses on digital transformation projects in financial services, smart cities, and manufacturing.

South Korea has yet to introduce comprehensive regulations for stablecoins tied to the won. National lawmakers and the government are working on the Digital Asset Basic Act, which aims to create a formal legal framework for issuing and trading Korean won stablecoins and other digital assets.

Chainlink has previously secured partnerships with prominent financial entities such as Swift, Euroclear, Mastercard, and UBS, establishing a strong presence among global institutions exploring blockchain integration.

Currently, the Korean won is the second most active fiat currency in global crypto trading volume, following the US dollar, highlighting South Korea’s significant standing in the cryptocurrency landscape within Asia.

Launch details remain undisclosed

Although LG CNS and Chainlink have outlined their intentions to work together on stablecoin infrastructure and digital asset solutions, the announcement did not specify any financial details, participating customers, or anticipated commercial launch date. There is also no confirmation regarding the direct use of Chainlink’s services within Project Hangang at this stage.

The companies emphasized their commitment to advancing South Korea’s blockchain ecosystem, but concrete implementation plans, licensing, and rollout schedules have yet to be made public.
