Block has introduced its first large-scale advertising campaign for Bitcoin, called “Bitcoin Does,” aiming to engage the estimated 60 million Americans with an interest in digital currency but who have not yet participated in the market.
New campaign strategy targets mass adoption
The “Bitcoin Does” campaign marks a shift in Block’s outreach approach, focusing on demonstrating real-life uses for Bitcoin instead of delving into complex technical aspects such as mining or blockchain. The company seeks to present Bitcoin as a straightforward and practical financial solution, responding to the questions and concerns of everyday consumers.
Maria Pesce, who leads Bitcoin marketing at Block and works across its Cash App, Square, and Proto product lines, explained the rationale behind the campaign. Pesce stated that feedback from potential users highlighted a need for clearer messaging that emphasizes Bitcoin’s tangible benefits.
Pesce reported that Block’s research showed many people are seeking “more honest money” and are trying to understand how Bitcoin fits into their daily lives.
Customer insights inform campaign messaging
The concept behind the “Bitcoin Does” campaign emerged from insights gathered through conversations with Cash App users and Square merchants. Many expressed frustration with inflation, financial bailouts, and private equity practices, motivating Block to position Bitcoin as a more transparent and accessible alternative.
Pesce highlighted that messages from small business owners influenced the campaign’s narrative, with several describing Bitcoin as “more honest money.” The marketing materials focus on Bitcoin’s fixed supply, self-custody options, and why younger generations are increasingly choosing the cryptocurrency for its perceived stability and transparency.
Interactive experiences and payment innovation
Block also used experiential marketing, debuting its “Lightning Lake” activation at ComplexCon, a cultural event. At this venue, attendees engaged in interactive activities such as “fishing for Bitcoin” and making payments via the Lightning Network, a second-layer protocol that enables faster, low-fee transactions over the Bitcoin network.
Mini dictionary: The Lightning Network is a second-layer scaling solution for Bitcoin that allows for instant transactions between users and reduces congestion and fees on the main blockchain, making micro-payments practical.
Block’s design philosophy aims to make using Bitcoin as simple as sending email, underlining the company’s focus on accessibility. The company also promotes 0% Bitcoin transaction processing fees on Square, further incentivizing merchants and customers to adopt digital payments.
Block’s team emphasized that design choices and customer experience are crucial for helping new users reach “light bulb moments” where the advantages of Bitcoin become clear.
Block’s expanding role in the digital ecosystem
Founded by Jack Dorsey, Block is a financial services and technology company known for its prominent brands including Cash App and Square. The company is expanding its reach in the digital asset sector, developing tools and experiences that aim to simplify and promote Bitcoin adoption.
The launch of this campaign coincides with Block’s efforts to join broader technology alliances. The company recently aligned with major firms such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and Visa in initiatives focused on developing secure artificial intelligence applications.
By prioritizing practical demonstrations and tailored messaging, Block intends to bridge the gap between curiosity and active participation among millions of prospective Bitcoin users in the United States.
