Tether, the issuer of the USD₮ stablecoin, is advancing its strategy in the digital asset sector with a dual focus on expanding stablecoin-powered payments in Latin America and strengthening Bitcoin mining infrastructure through open-source initiatives.
Tether partners with Peso to expand USD₮ payments
On October 21, 2026, Tether announced its financial backing of Peso, a Bolivian fintech company, in a pre-seed funding round. Peso aims to broaden its USD₮-based financial services across Latin America, including in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina. Peso offers users an international account denominated in USD₮, enabling saving, spending, investing, and cross-border money transfers through a single app.
In Bolivia, Peso customers can use USD₮ to pay for everyday purchases, such as food via Yango. Additionally, Peso supports merchant transactions at the point-of-sale and virtual accounts linked to the local financial system, utilizing QR codes and automated clearing house (ACH) rails for seamless payments.
The recently raised funds will be dedicated to expanding local payment rails, improving merchant payment solutions, and developing infrastructure for virtual accounts. These developments are intended to facilitate easier stablecoin-to-local currency conversions and enhance the practical use of digital dollars.
Peso allows users in Latin America to transfer, save, and spend in USD₮, while merchants gain easier access to digital dollar payment solutions integrated directly into their local banking systems.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that this investment advances the company’s goal of making stablecoins a practical option for daily financial transactions in the region.

Tether secures 15 partners for Bitcoin Mining Development Kit (MDK)
Separately, Tether has obtained commitments from 15 entities in the mining industry—including ASIC manufacturers, mining operators, and pools—to build integrations with its open-source Mining Development Kit (MDK). The MDK framework aims to resolve fragmentation in mining infrastructure, where operations often use hardware and software from various vendors.
Participants are developing MDK workers, which serve as translators bridging existing mining hardware and software to a standardized interface. This approach enables developers to build applications compatible across multiple systems, reducing fragmentation and simplifying integration for miners and developers alike.
According to the company, MDK will also facilitate the creation of AI solutions that can monitor mining equipment, diagnose operational issues, and optimize the efficiency of mining activities. However, seamless interoperability and robust communication channels will be essential as the platform evolves.
“We are entering a period where software will increasingly operate physical infrastructure, not simply report on it. That does not work at scale if every machine speaks a different language. Mining is one of the clearest examples of this problem today. MDK gives companies a way to keep control of their own technology while creating the common foundation developers and autonomous systems need to work across,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether.
The QVAC mining software, as noted by Tether, already operates directly on MDK, serving as an example of how artificial intelligence can interact with mining hardware through a standardized ecosystem.
The MDK project is currently in its early stages. Tether has set a target to unveil MDK version 0.11 at the Plan ₿ Forum in Lugano on October 23–24, 2026, and aims to release version 1.0 by the end of 2026. The framework is available for developers to begin creating integrations and applications now.

Tether’s broader digital asset strategy
By supporting both Peso and its MDK initiative, Tether is addressing specific challenges facing the digital asset sector, including cross-border stablecoin payments and the technical obstacles to greater mining efficiency. Success for these projects will depend on adoption rates and collaborative development within their respective ecosystems.
