Ripple has secured final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish its own federally supervised national trust bank, marking a significant step for the company’s expansion strategy in the United States.
Ripple to launch Ripple National Trust Bank
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse shared the announcement, calling the development a major milestone ahead of the company’s Swell conference in New York City. The approved charter paves the way for the creation of Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB), which will operate under federal oversight.
With this charter, RNTB gains the ability to manage reserves for Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, act as a collateral trustee for stablecoin holders, and provide digital asset custody services targeting institutional clients. Garlinghouse highlighted the importance of integrating digital assets into the current financial infrastructure, stating the company has consistently supported collaboration between crypto projects and traditional banking.
We’ve always said crypto and banks work better together, and this latest approval shows how to integrate digital assets into the existing financial system. The revolution isn’t outside the system. It’s from within the system.
The OCC’s final approval follows a conditional clearance that Ripple obtained in December 2024. This development reinforces Ripple’s regulatory status and strengthens its foundation in compliance and financial security.
However, Ripple’s national trust bank will not function as a typical commercial bank. It will not accept everyday consumer deposits or issue loans but will instead focus on management of reserves and fiduciary custody.
Stablecoin operations and regulatory structure
The RLUSD stablecoin will continue to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a fully regulated subsidiary of Ripple under the New York Department of Financial Services. The federally approved trust bank’s main responsibilities will be managing stablecoin reserves and offering custody for institutional assets.
Ripple has reported that the market capitalization of RLUSD has climbed to approximately $2.5 billion since its launch in December 2024. RLUSD is increasingly being used for institutional payments and trading within Ripple’s ecosystem.
In an environment where market conditions can shift in moments due to decisions from the Federal Reserve or surprise altcoin listings, traders now face significant risks and costs from using multiple platforms to track news, charts, and portfolios. As a result, many are turning to single-screen solutions like CryptoAppsy, which offers real-time market data, charting, alerts, and aggregated news feeds without requiring an account, aiming to help active investors keep pace with sudden developments.
Price movement and event outlook
Despite the significant regulatory progress, XRP’s price showed little immediate movement following the OCC’s decision. Early trading on October 27 saw XRP fluctuating between $1.30 and $1.31, with limited price changes over the past day.
The approval is directly linked to Ripple’s stablecoin operations and institutional custody offerings, which do not necessarily generate a sudden increase in XRP demand in the short term.
Ripple’s Swell 2026 conference is scheduled for October 27–29 in New York City. The event is expected to bring together participants from the traditional finance sector, the broader crypto industry, and the XRP ecosystem to discuss developments in digital assets and regulatory trends.
RLUSD’s growing role in institutional payments, supported by the new trust bank, reflects Ripple’s focus on bridging regulatory compliance with digital asset innovation under federal supervision.
