Concerns about quantum computing’s future impact on Bitcoin are discouraging some institutional investors from making significant commitments to the cryptocurrency, according to Muneeb Ali, founder of Stacks. Ali has urged the Bitcoin development community to outline a credible roadmap for upgrading network security in response to these emerging threats.

Quantum computing concerns weigh on Bitcoin

In a recent Chain Reaction podcast appearance, Ali stated that apprehension over quantum computing already places a ceiling on Bitcoin’s growth potential. He believes that institutional investors with lower risk tolerance may postpone large Bitcoin acquisitions until developers clearly demonstrate plans for transitioning to quantum-resistant security standards.

Ali explained that skepticism over Bitcoin’s long-term safety in the face of quantum advancements could lead institutions to wait for developers to implement and communicate a robust upgrade path.

Stacks operates as a layer-2 solution for Bitcoin, introducing smart contracts and decentralized applications to the network. The project, co-founded by Ali, uses Bitcoin for settlement while enabling additional functionalities.

Urgency for quantum security upgrades

Ali has warned that Bitcoin could enter a more vulnerable phase if meaningful progress toward quantum-resistant security is not achieved by 2028. He emphasized that protocol upgrades often require many years to deploy, followed by further delays as users migrate their funds to new, more secure addresses.

Looking ahead, Ali identified 2030 as an ideal target year for Bitcoin’s transition to quantum-resistant cryptography, citing guidelines from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). However, he also noted that advances in artificial intelligence could accelerate the arrival of effective quantum computers, potentially bringing the timeline closer to 2029.

Mini dictionary: US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) – A US federal agency that develops measurement standards, including guidelines for cryptographic security used worldwide.

He acknowledged that some members of the Bitcoin community view the quantum threat as exaggerated or too distant to warrant urgent action. However, Ali argued that a lack of consensus—and the absence of a clear upgrade plan—may further erode investor trust.

Ali described the debate over quantum security as potentially damaging to confidence, especially among investors who expect a transparent and strategic response to long-term risks.

Potential industry-wide impact

Ali also noted that if a powerful quantum computer were to undermine Bitcoin, the repercussions could extend throughout the digital asset sector, including projects implementing their own post-quantum protections. He stated that a significant incident involving Bitcoin would likely have downstream effects across the industry.

Despite the warnings, Ali stated that a functional quantum computer capable of attacking Bitcoin addresses would probably first be developed by leading research institutions or large tech companies, such as Google or Microsoft. He suggested that such organizations would have little motivation to use the technology for illicit purposes, considering the potential legal implications.

Developers respond with new solutions

In response to these concerns, developers are experimenting with mechanisms designed to protect Bitcoin from possible quantum attacks. In September, StarkWare, a blockchain research and development firm, announced that an optimization challenge held by its researchers had resulted in a 79% reduction in the estimated computational cost for creating a prototype quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction.

This method does not require changes to Bitcoin’s consensus protocol. However, at present, the cost reductions from StarkWare’s research remain at the experimental stage, as demonstrated through benchmark testing. The company characterizes its technology as a contingency measure, while continuing to advocate for comprehensive protocol-level changes to ensure robust long-term security for Bitcoin.
