A recent security breach involving Binance, the world’s largest centralized cryptocurrency exchange, may fuel increased adoption of decentralized trading platforms, according to Geoffrey Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered.
Shift toward decentralized exchanges
Kendrick stated that the incident with Binance is likely to accelerate the migration of crypto traders to decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like Uniswap. He noted that Uniswap has never experienced an exploit and suggested that its share of overall crypto trading could see further gains against centralized exchanges (CEXs) as a result of recent events.
“I would encourage investors to re-engage with Uniswap,” Kendrick remarked. “The hack of the largest CEX in Binance should see the ratio of DEX to CEX trading continue to increase.”
I would encourage investors to re-engage with Uniswap. The decentralized exchange has never had any exploits, and the hack of Binance should see the ratio of DEX to CEX trading continue to increase.
Recent data from CoinGecko illustrates this trend: in the second quarter of 2026, the DEX-to-CEX spot trading volume ratio among the top 10 exchanges reached 23.5%. This marked an increase of 2.1 percentage points compared to the first quarter of 2026.
| Period | Top 10 DEX-to-CEX Spot Ratio |
|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 21.4% |
| Q2 2026 | 23.5% |
Mini dictionary: Uniswap is a leading decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the Ethereum blockchain, allowing peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading without an intermediary and utilizing automated market maker protocols.
Price targets and outlook
Looking ahead, Kendrick maintained his $100 price target for Uniswap’s governance token (UNI) by 2030. He commented that the Binance hack further supports this estimate and may even indicate that the target is conservative.
Standard Chartered’s projection is based on the expectation that assets locked in decentralized finance (DeFi) could reach $2.7 trillion by 2030, positioning Uniswap as a critical venue for trading tokenized assets.
Kendrick warned that the immediate aftermath of the Binance incident is likely to result in additional price pressure across the crypto market. He anticipates that further clarity on the hack and the unfreezing of assets will be necessary before the market can stabilize.
Only after assets are unfrozen and more detail of the hack emerges will we find a new base.
Market reaction
Following the breach, Bitcoin prices hovered near $77,000 while Binance Coin (BNB) fell over 8% in 24 hours. Other major decentralized finance tokens also experienced double-digit losses: Aave’s AAVE dropped 11.3% to $118.54 and Uniswap’s UNI fell 10.4% to $6.48, according to CoinGecko.
Binance confirmed that the attack involved the compromise of an engineer’s laptop, with the total loss estimated at $6.3 billion. The company is providing live updates as the situation continues to develop.
