Solana validators told to limit traffic due to critical Linux kernel vulnerability

In Brief

  • 🚨 Solana validators running Ubuntu face urgent action as a critical Linux vulnerability remains unpatched.

  • ⚡ Anza and the Solana Foundation advised operators to filter inbound traffic and disable certain TCP features to mitigate risk in $SOL validators.

  • 🛡️ The flaw has a high severity score and could expose node credentials and admin access if exploited.

On November 2, Anza, a key development group supporting Solana‘s infrastructure and tooling, issued an urgent advisory to Solana mainnet-beta validators regarding a critical security vulnerability affecting the Linux kernel. The warning targets validators operating on Ubuntu, urging immediate action to reduce potential risk before an official security patch is made available by Ubuntu.

Critical kernel flaw prompts urgent action

Tim Garcia, who leads validator relations at the Solana Foundation, relayed specific recommendations for Ubuntu operators to mitigate exposure to the new vulnerability, classified as CVE-2026-98432. Garcia’s guidance was disseminated through a public thread, which was also highlighted by Anza.

Garcia outlined three key configuration changes. He urged validators to drop inbound TCP packets that arrive with IPv4 options using nftables, a Linux packet filtering framework. He also recommended disabling Multipath TCP by setting net.mptcp.enabled to 0 and turning off TCP request socket migration with net.ipv4.tcp_migrate_req set to 0.

Operators using Ubuntu should filter inbound traffic and disable Multipath TCP and socket migration to reduce the risk linked to the Linux kernel flaw. While these steps can lower exposure, full protection remains unlikely until a complete patch is released.

Red Hat, a leading enterprise Linux provider, emphasized that while filtering measures can provide some defense, they do not entirely prevent possible exploitation of the vulnerability.

Anza’s operating requirements specify that their Solana client is designed to run on Ubuntu 24.04 with a public IPv4 address. Currently, Ubuntu has not issued a patch for this vulnerability, leaving validators reliant on mitigations.

DistributionPatched Status for CVE-2026-98432
Ubuntu 24.04, 22.04, 26.10, 26.04Vulnerable, patch in progress
Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04Vulnerable, no fix released
Red Hat RHEL 8, 9, 10Patched
Debian bookworm, trixiePatched

Technical details and impact

The CVE-2026-98432 vulnerability has been rated with a CVSS score of 9.8, indicating a high level of risk. It involves a use-after-free bug in the Linux kernel’s IPv4 networking code, enabling the kernel to read memory that has already been freed, which can create critical security risks in networked systems running on certain Linux distributions.

The flaw specifically affects the TCP handshake process for incoming IPv4 connections. When a retransmitted SYN packet is handled by a different CPU, a freed child socket can still be referenced, causing a function called ip_options_build() to access invalid memory. This behavior could potentially be leveraged by attackers to compromise affected machines.

Garcia recommended disabling features like Multipath TCP and TCP request socket migration because the presence of these functionalities makes exploits targeting the bug even easier. Notably, the vulnerability’s impact is diminished on IPv6 connections, where handshake procedures differ and avoid the memory reuse issue.

Mini dictionary: Anza is a core technology and ecosystem development group, previously known as Solana Labs’ client team, responsible for major components powering the Solana blockchain, including validator software and infrastructure tools.

Broader context and previous incidents

The vulnerability remains open on major Ubuntu releases, which are widely used by blockchain node operators and developers. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has listed all supported and some legacy versions as ‘vulnerable work in progress’ and has not yet provided a security update.

Other major Linux distributions have acted more rapidly, with Red Hat and Debian both releasing kernel patches over the past few days. These mitigations highlight the critical role underlying operating systems play in the security of crypto infrastructure.

Linux vulnerabilities have previously impacted cryptocurrency operators. In May 2026, incidents known as Copy Fail and Dirty Frag exposed exchanges, validator operators, and custody solutions to potential attacks.

If compromised, a Linux server running blockchain software could enable attackers to access signing credentials and gain administrative rights, posing a severe risk to secure crypto systems like Solana’s validator network.

Earlier this year, Solana operators were instructed to apply a critical validator update (v3.0.14) affecting the blockchain client itself. In this case, the security risk lies deeper, at the Linux kernel level, which directly supports the Solana client’s operations on Ubuntu systems.

A persistent Linux kernel vulnerability continues to affect Ubuntu-based Solana validators, maintaining a high-security risk until a patch from Canonical is released. Without this fix, validator operators must rely on system-level mitigations to reduce the threat surface.
