Bhutan is set to modernize its national identification system by transitioning from Polygon to the Ethereum 
$2,266 blockchain. The move is expected to encompass the identities of approximately 800,000 Bhutanese citizens, streamlining their access to government services. By relocating its digital ID system to Ethereum, Bhutan aims to ensure greater security and control for its nationals. This strategic decision underscores a growing trust in blockchain technology as an efficient tool for governmental operations.
What Changes Does the New System Bring?
The migration involves complete integration onto the Ethereum blockchain by the first quarter of 2026, according to Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi. This transition represents the first nationwide scale application of Ethereum technology for identity systems. By leveraging the decentralized nature of Ethereum, Bhutan is pursuing enhanced privacy and sovereignty in its identification process. Beyond securing identities, the new digital system is expected to make verification processes more user-friendly and streamlined.
Why Is Crypto Investment Significant for Bhutan?
Bhutan has invested significantly in cryptocurrency, holding over 11,000 Bitcoin 
$76,467 valued at approximately $1.3 billion, making it one of the top sovereign Bitcoin holders globally. The country’s early entry into the cryptocurrency sphere has been facilitated by its rich hydropower resources, which have driven economically viable, low-emission Bitcoin mining operations. Bhutan strategically manages its cryptocurrency reserves, selling portions at market peaks while retaining substantial core holdings to maintain economic liquidity and growth.
The national holdings constitute around 40% of Bhutan’s GDP, reflecting the country’s strategic investments in cryptocurrency. Their hydropower allows not only for sustainable mining practices but also contributes to Bhutan’s broader economic resilience. This fiscal approach showcases how Bhutan is bolstering its economic framework with innovative strategies.
Furthermore, Bhutan has embraced cryptocurrency beyond reserves by launching a system where tourists can make payments using diverse cryptocurrencies. This integration aims to attract tech-savvy travelers by offering modern, flexible payment options in the tourism industry.
The integration was presented by influential figures including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, highlighting the collaborative efforts in this project. Ethereum Foundation emphasized the endeavor as pioneering, given its scope and technology.
“Citizens will enjoy greater agency over personal data,” cited Miyaguchi.
“This collaboration marks a significant advancement in leveraging blockchain for public governance,” Buterin stated.
